I just got DENIED Apple iPhone Developer status. I've been working on a killer app (yes, really) for a few weeks now on the Mac and wanted to port it to the iPhone, but now I can't because I can't put the f'n app on the iPhone.

Funny that I blogged about it yesterday and I predicted this would be an issue.

Did they give a reason?

edit: hmm, guess we were both thinking the same thing at the same time.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I think I have to agree with the people who thought Apple didn't want to go down this road. They are really moving slow on it and ruling with an iron fist (Even moreso than normal).

I can see why Apple would want to move slowly, but there should have been some expectation management on their part when they invited developers to sign up.

Isn't this the beta of the SDK? I can understand why Apple would want to limit the beta, if indeed thats the case. I liken it to game companies with closed betas of their games (like WoW).

Still sucks though. I'm dying just because I have to wait so long for the apps to be available, so I can imagine that a lot of developers are dying to actually code for the iPhone/Touch but have to wait in order to do so.

Hah.. I was approved in seconds.

Then again, I had an existing ADC account for the past 10 years.

True dat. I fully expected some apps to have been made available directly following the SDK announcement. The June launch date surprised the hell out of me.

Oh the whining...

Here's the real deal: the SDK and the dev program are two entirely different things.

Anybody can get the SDK now and then write and test their apps against the iPhone emulator on the Mac. It's free and nobody is being locked out of it.

The dev program is for those that need to put these apps on an actual iPhone. And that requires v2.0 of the iPhone OS which is currently in beta and not ready to be released to the general public. Which pretty much means the entire dev program is in beta. And Apple is just slowly ramping that one up. So it's no wonder not every Joe Blow is being admitted right now. Be patient. It will all happen in due time. You'll get it by June at the very latest.

See, here's the thing.

If you're gonna write a killer app, you need to test it ON THE iPHONE. Not on an emulator. When June rolls around, I want the app to be ready. And if that sounds a little selfish, well, yeah. That's what happens when you work on something important.

Can't you test it in Aspen Simulator and then wrap it up when the App store opens?
Its not ideal, but unless the project is openGL based it should be fine.

Egads developers whine. Have some patients. For one thing you haven't been denied, you just haven't been accepted into the limited numbers of the beta testing.

If you got in you'd be whining why not everything works. Let some other developers test it out and then when it's tested out and Apple lets you into the finished product, you'll rush your application out their.

80,000 developers aren't going to get in, in the first weeks. You should know that. Apple will let in a couple of hundred or a few thousand and once they've got a more stable system, then they'll let everyone else in.

People familiar with Apple should be used to this by now. Also Apple said they would allow a limitted number into the beta.
