NOT an HDR image. This was a stormy sunset in Northern Michigan

Doesn't one usually strap the bonnet onto the small child?

Nice photo though. I'd have tried to bring out the details in the shadows a bit.

I think if I boosted the darks then the image would look too HDR. And actually, that's pretty much what light was visible when I took the picture. Boosting the darks would be create an unrealistic image.

I probably should have shot with a little less shore line in the image.

Yeah, know what you mean for the shadows. After finding the highlights and shadows sliders in Aperture, I wondered what the fuss was about making 'realistic' looking HDRs.

Oh, I see the pic now. Usually they do perhaps, but in this case the small child is in fact on the bonnet, so my mind is blown.

For some reason high-contrast BW street photography is something that I am really into. I switch my D90 into jpg B&W mode, attach the 50mm f1.8 and just walk and shoot.

Very nice indeed, though I would have loved to have just a bit more background space on the right. The body of the bird is kind of … ‘unresty’ where it is now.

And what’s the flower it’s perched on? It looks almost like plastic. Actually, it looks a bit like a rolled-up red condom, ehem.

Do you like the landscape version betterer?

The above images are crops from this original picture:

Correct. I am not a good gardener and don't have enough plants to attract the hummingbirds, so I use the feeder.

The landscape is better, but a bit too much, I think. Somewhere in between would lie the happy medium, methinks.

Recent trip to Venice

Purposely out of focus. I like high contrast b&w as well, but I can't get the balance right - for me anyway.

Nice. I really love my 35mm f/1.8 on the D90, but I need wider. That new 24mm f/1.4 is just too expensive though.

I know it's not kosher in nature photography, but I want to clone out the little black speck on the leaf. Regardless, it's a very, very pretty image.

We live in a city that houses the largest fleet of B-52 bombers in America (Barksdale Air Force Base). This man is a member of our church and a friend of our family's, and he's retiring with honors after 24 years in the service. I was allowed on base to take pictures of him and his family. Some more from the set are here.

I thought (your location, the building in the background) it was on Barksdale. The gentleman looks proud, and with good reason. 24 years is a LONG time to do that kind of work. I should know.

I like the B & W picture of him standing in front of the flagpoles in your Flicr album; it's strong and conveys a lot of the man's pride and sense of accomplishment. I leave it to you post if you wish.

Good work, by the way.

Thank you much. He seemed to garner quite a bit of respect from his peers. He's an absolutely rock-solid guy. You're a retired airman as well? I had no idea. How long did you serve?

I'll post the one you mentioned (last one, I promise)...

Nahhhh. He's getting right to work. He isn't the time off kind of guy. I know the job he just took, and he's going to be sitting pretty after his second retirement.

Ryan, you're bigtime into the high-pass filter these days!

Reminds me a bit of Brad Trent–minus the strobing.

Fcuk, I gotta get back into shooting... I really miss it!

I'm all over the map right now, which isn't good. I'm trying to scale it back into more of a look that won't be passé four years from now. I experiment with editing too much.

I'm trying to trend more to this editing style (the picture is boring, but you get the idea):

And yes, you need to shoot.

The skies and the water seem to all be the same shade (and fluffy). Really pretty area.
