I was just about to post it was T minus 8 hours and I'd had no spoilers...

Then I accidentally hit the spoiler thread instead of this one.

Luckily, the most recent post was an overall opinion, so I'm only spoiled in the sense I read an analysis slightly more in-depth than a single sentence.

I wasn't even quite sure I was in the spoiler thread until the post before that, which gave me a minor detail, and the realization I had done something very, very wrong.

Ugh...

I was playing CS:GO few nights ago, and some squeaker, completely out of context, half-screams, "Alright, I'm going to ruin Star Wars for everyone—(says a character's name)..."

I literally ripped my headphones off and threw them to the floor. I have no idea what he said, but if I'd waited a second more, I'd want to kill someone.

That's why I see movies on opening day.

Well, apart from that sort of madhouse being very much not my thing, it would have taken a fair amount of advance planning.

This is speedy for me... I mean, I just saw Star Trek: Into Darkness.

I figured I should update...

Turns out I bailed from the spoiler thread fast enough. Nothing was spoiled.

Any non-spoilery impressions to share?

I don't do theaters, will wait for it on video.

I'm in the minority in that I found it "merely okay".

Same here. Nothing sounds more horrifying than sitting a room of people I don't know, with my enjoyment at least partially related to the decency of crowd.

My home, my food, my quiet room, my chair.

We don't go out that often, but when we do it's worth it. The recliners that my local theater has now really make the movie experience better. No fighting over the armrest, plenty of leg room, fewer people in the theater, very comfortable, good visibility. That, plus some movies just call out to be seen on a big screen.

I love my job, but I'm working closely with humans at least 60 hours per week, and leisure time is spent with my two small children. If my wife and I get a chance to watch a movie, we're not going to let it be ruined by some stranger with B.O. who laughs loudly at inappropriate times and mumbles advice to characters.

Back on topic: anyone here (having seen the movie or otherwise) catching up on the new canon works? I've read Aftermath and the Lando comic so far, and currently going through Lost Stars.

Aftermath was borderline terrible (though it gives Temmin Wexley an early backstory), but the Lando comic was amazing. I wasn't going to read Lost Stars, since it's classified as "young adult," but it's been recommended by so many fans that I decided to give it a shot.

I enjoyed a book set between 3 and 4, and look forward to the rest. The Last Jedi series I think, also classified as YA.

Yes, indeed.

I'll pick that one up as well.

I understand this, and would agree in general, but like andi, give the thumb's up to "modern" theatres.

My theatre experience with Star Wars was great, though it should be said I chose the 10p show to cut down on kids, and wanted 2D, which cuts down on casuals.

The newer theaters, especially IMAX, are a great experience, not just in visuals but also in sound. Reserved seating has changed the game completely, the one locally also has an attendant that's in the theater at all times during the showing, keeping an eye out for talkers, texters, and generally unruly idiots. You only get one warning too, they ask you to settle down, and if you don't they bounce you. It's a hell of a lot more civilized. $20-something /ticket is a little steep, but given the amenities, comfort (big reclining seats w/ tons of legroom), and technology provided, it's well worth it.

I feel bad for you, truly.

700 people laughing and applauding a movie with you, and you think sitting home alone is a good idea?

That's sad.

Every since seeing Empire on opening day, I've been seeing a lot of movies the same way. Jedi, Aliens, Avatar, Superman, etc.

That all sounds great, actually. I haven't been to a theater in probably...10 year, give or take.

To each his/her own. I'm not saying everyone else should be like me. It's my personal preference. So no, it's not "sad."

That said, I actually enjoy theatre, where the reaction of a crowd can actually influence the performance to an extent.

Early on, I mentioned how Disney was going to have quite the fight on their hands in terms of leaks before the movie was released.

I heard it theorized the reason this didn't happen is because people actively didn't want spoilers, or more accurately, the leaks happened, but they were deliberately ignored by almost everyone.

Not exactly true. I think several Hollywood insider sites had synopses by summer if not earlier.

Those insider sites are the ones I'm saying were deliberately ignored.

None of the mainstream outlets, who were doubtlessly familiar with the existence of those sites, went "it will be a good strategy for us to blow this up".
