It'd be handy in the gaming section as video games are best presented in motion, and gfys are much smaller files.

Yep. There are few other sites that do stuff like this, but I'll be honest, I'm pretty ignorant of the tech or the file extensions.

The linked page is actually a webm video. We could probably add a tag for those, but it's dependent on browser support. WebM doesn't work on IE or Safari (Mac or Win) without 3rd party plugins.

There's an easier solution. On gfycat pages (like the linked one) mouse over the video and click on the chain link button. You'll get four link codes, one of them being a .GIF link for the video. Which will work here in a normal IMG tag.

I hate to disagree but I only use safari on variety of versions of OS X and I don't have any problems. I don't think I'm running any plug-ins, either.

That's missing the point. The gif is non-compressed which means it takes forever to load. Right on the page:

Gif Size: 10M
Gfy Size: 697k

That's a ridiculous difference.
