When i try to load the MacNN forum using Safari, i've been getting and i keep on getting this message:

"There seems to have been a slight problem with the database. Please try again by pressing the refresh button in your browser. An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, who you can also contact if the problem persists. We apologise for any inconvenience."

If i reload the page, it normally shows up properly. Sometimes it takes 2-3 reloads. I emptied the cache but i don't know what else to do.

Has this been happening to you?

I got so fed up this morning that I signed up over at macosx.com. I'll see how things go over there. The community is smaller, but I have a feeling it will be growing with defectors from macnn if these problems continue.

Dear admin, please fix this.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

gorgonzola said it's MySQL behaving badly, and randomly not letting php connect to its socket when i asked him a few weeks ago. I say it's probably misconfiguration, but he is aware of it and he's looking into it.

1. This problem is on macnn and belongs in the lounge.
2. Even if this was a problem with the safari browser this still blongs in a different forum.

Please check for which forum you should put this in first.

This has nothing to do with OS X!!

The original poster thought it was because of Safari, there are quite a few posts about sites that don't work in Safari although they should be in Mac OS X Software.

Anyways, no it isn't a Safari thing, it's a MacNN thing.

I'm tired of the mods here. They've always been polite don't get me wrong, but when it comes to fixing technical problems they are pretty much clueless.

I remember when they kept trying out all the different bulletin board software before finally getting smart and switching to vbulletin. A suggestion I used to make all the freaking time.

The new problem is with their database connection string and mySQL table corruptions. Somebody who knwo what they were doing could fix it very quickly and keep it fixed.

I recommend that the mods find somebody on this board to fix it for them :-)

Call the folks at Ars Technica and ask them for help. They have more members, more posts, and no db problems. Just find out what they're doing and copy it. Period.

Yeah, but if he didn't know it was a problem on macnn, he still should of posted it in OS X software.

Thats what I meant by "Even if this was a problem with the safari browser this still blongs in a different forum."

That's not entirely true. The problems people really notice and complain about are the ones that are much harder to fix. Others come up, we just fix them much quicker. In addition, we're all unpaid volunteers and don't have an infinite number of hours to devote to solving MacNN problems. You are correct that none of us are professional systems administrators and generally have no official training in that regard; however, I think we do a pretty decent job keeping junk running around here given our volunteer status and actual experience. If you'd like to (or know someone who would like to) spend several hours a day looking through MySQL logs and such for a few weeks without any compensation and think that you or they can fix stuff faster, be my guest.

I remember when they kept trying out all the different bulletin board software before finally getting smart and switching to vbulletin. A suggestion I used to make all the freaking time.
This is patently false. We used to use UBB and then switched to vBulletin. MacNN Forums have never used any other software. It's all well and good to make suggestions, but the UBB import scripts in older versions were not up to snuff, and that's kind of an important factor when transitioning a site of this size.

The new problem is with their database connection string and mySQL table corruptions. Somebody who knwo what they were doing could fix it very quickly and keep it fixed.
No, it has nothing to do with table corruptions.

I recommend that the mods find somebody on this board to fix it for them :-)
They're fixed now anyway.

Locking this thread, there's another one in the Lounge. And BTW, just because someone is not a mod does not mean that they have no right to tell you that you're posting in the wrong forum or that the thread is offtopic.
