I like the little line above the current App in the dock. Awesome idea. Whats that thing in the iTunes window?

Looks like the real deal. The titlebar widgets even fit with something John Geleynse said recently on some list or other about Apple addressing the inconsistency between the recessed widgets in metal and the protruding ones in aqua.

I can't believe labels are finally back. Is that how they're displayed now, on a rounded rectangle behind the file name? I suppose that would make sense, since icons are optional in some views but file names are always visible. Seems like an elegant solution.

I'm not the biggest fan of metal, but if the new Finder is more polished and less buggy, it can be as metal as it wants.

No more fancy colors and crap, I just want it to be as fast as possible.

All that this eye candy does is make the OS less useable!

Complete fake. There is no way someone in a position to take these pics would have an IE disk image on thier computer.

Uh, look again. In the bottom left, you can see the windows that are behind it. In the
bottom right, you get the impression that the crop was done such that only the
Finder window would be in the picture. They don't match up.

And who the **** died and gave you permission to treat everyone like they're an idiot?

I still can't even begin to comprehend how Apple could possibly put a gradient in the titlebar, it's so out of place it ain't funny.

Apple should have a look at what swiz (fellow MacNN member) created, the titlebar he created in the following theme looks like something Apple would have come up with - it's great!!!

Oh, I think they are real... just very very early builds where they were "trying" things.

To echo another's comment, if Panther were to look like that, looks like my Tibook will be sporting its first theme because the GUI in those pics is just horrid.

Re: This is fake

First, I'm really really really pissed off because I wrote this whole message and then accidentally deleted it. Seems you can't control-Z in these input boxes.

Second, I think these shots are fake, too. I hope they are for some of the reasons outlined below. I'll be going into a lot less detail in light of the fact that I'm having to type it all again. I did do an Observation/Conclusion thing, but this time I'll just make the observations and you can make your own conclusions.

I have only skimmed the thread, so apologies if these points have been brought up. Just seemed like everyone was "WOOHOO"ing without really looking closely. And similarity to other posts is just coincidence.

OBSERVATION: In the Activity Monitor window there are strange inconsistencies.

* First there are really tacky colours. Windows type tacky colour, not beautiful Apple colours.

* Second, the "% Nice" uses a , to seperate the decimals, not a . like the rest of the %'s. This smacks to me of a slip-up by someone European making the fakes.

* Third, the "Threads" and "Processes" don't line up right. Unless this is a very early build, it's very sloppy.

OBSERVATION: Yahoo Instant messenger is in the dock and on the desktop. If this is Panther, that presumably means no Yahoo support in iChat.

OBSERVATION: In the full screen of the expose desktop, Safari is all blocked out. Why? What incriminating website could he/she be looking at?

OBSERVATION: Why are the iChat windows censored totally? Why not just block them out like the Safari window?

OBSERVATION: About Finder is all wrong. "The Macintosh Desktop Experience"? And why "Finder version 10.3" rather than "Mac OS X (10.3)" like we'd expect? These aren't big things, obviously, but still...

OBSERVATION: No build number. Seems strange, since they'll most likely be giving out preview copies on Monday, and developers will want to know what build they're working with. If it's the final release, how did slip-ups like above creep in?

OBSERVATION: In the iChat window, it says "There is no camera attached to this computer." Yet the progress bar seems to be showing activity of some sort?

OBSERVATION: The Finder window named Xdrive is metal, but not entirely consistently. The metal has a bar down the right, next to the scroll bar, unlike Safari. This on its own is nothing that important, but the grow icon thing in the bottom right seems misplaced.

OBSERVATION: In the Mail screenshot, the "Working Offline" seems all wrong. Especially the "o" in working.

It just seems all wrong to me. I'm bound to end up with egg on my face, but I thought these items needed discussion.

- Jimmni
It's gotta be a fake; too ugly. Apple would never put labels in the name of a file, and never would put the colors in the main menu. It would be like in OS 9 and would have names to accompany them. That's my main reason.

first part...maybe i have better eyes, but the very bottom row of pixels are not right at all (don't roll your eyes at me! ) and i thought expose exposed hidden windows, i guess i didn't read into it far enough to realize that it shrunk them as well.

It has to be an early build. As others have noted, GUI elements look way too unfinished, e.g. the bottom-right 'pull' triangle in the BM Finder window not lining up.

While I still think the metal Finder is fugly, one thing that occurs to me is that the metal theme allows for a bordered window. Something that a lot of people complained about initially with Aqua was that one couldn't drag windows from anywhere but the title-bar. A brushed metal option in the Finder would at least allow that functionality, for those who want it.

It better be an option tho'

Looks like screensavers will be implemented into the desktop, so you can run them at the same time in the background. A bit like xBack. It's very soothing to have the beach screensaver running in the background whilst you surf the web!

Why would you need to run it as a screen saver?

/system/library/screen savers

show package contents of beach.slidesaver

then into contents/resources and copy the pics to a folder in your home folder.

open system prefs, desktop. select the folder with the beach pics in it and set change picture every x seconds.

no hackjobs needed.

DUH!
Because with the screensaver you have pan's fades and zooms. Plus some screensavers are in 3D, one I have places a water effect that runs in realtime over the background image, another has a 3D model of our galaxy that slowy spins. Another is a tunnel that the camera flys through. Another has the Matrix code running down the background.
Etc, etc.
My Window's friends were stunned when they saw it running.

about final look before GM, remember in Jaguar, the icon for address book was once bright purple? and of course the startup happy mac went through 2 revisions before GM

I like the reintroduction of labels and thinks the application of it to the name of the file is very clever

Am i the one one who doesn't mind brushed metal? A benefit to it is one can click and hold/move window anywhere on the BM instead of only the title bar...

Or maybe a thread titled "I like to make fun out of people for participating in a forum.."

Or "I like to make people look stupid because it makes me feel big"

Or something like that.
Great way to make friends Alex.

I'm hoping this new one is a system-wide replacement for the old group box, which was exceptionally fugly in Aqua.

That and the fact they look crappy made me 100% sure they were fake.

I thought that the faker themer didn't know that and made a mistake with the Mail drawer. But now it looks like it's still not fixed or the appearance has been reverted to that of 10.1 (resp. similar to).

Any word if you'll be able to turn off the brushed finder? I actually like the new grayish Aqua titlebars (I appear to be the only one). Hopefully you can turn the brushed Finder off, though. I can personally live with it if my Mac is faster than a dual 3GHz Xeon in Photoshop, couldn't you? People will always find the the tiniest things to bitch about.
