When I type a document using TextEdit and save it in RTF format it has 1 inch margins on the left and right. When I save it in Word format it saves the document with 1.25 inch margins on the left and right.

Why the difference and is there any way to save in Word format with 1 inch margins?

Thanks,
Doug

Well I'm not sure but I think that the width size is already pre determined in Textedit, again I'm not completely sure on this one. The only options that I see are some options regarding Window Size in the preferences, although I'm pretty sure that you could change this in Microsoft Word, or any other heavy weight word processing program like Mellel.

You can use the freeware Bean: Bean: An OS X Word Processor instead of Textedit to easily edit the margins. It was the same reason I switched to Bean rather than use Textedit.

Just checking it out - looks like TextEdit on steroids. Thanks for the great tip.

Sure. Just set the margins to 1" (Format > Document).

I don't think that is possible in TextEdit which is what my question was about.

If you activate the ruler in TextEdit you can manually shift the margins (downwards pointing arrows), but not on a permanent basis for all documents.

Not when you have saved a document in Word format. When you reopen the document the margins at set to 1.25" left and right and cannot be changed to 1.0 "
