Anyone know what's up with activity monitor when it doesn't show processes that are running? I've observed this happening plenty of times periodically over the years, but caught it in the act for the first time.

You can clearly see based on the CPU graph, that something besides what's in Activity Monitor's list is running. When you look at `top` in the terminal, you can see, it's ruby. I don't know why ruby is running, that's a whole other issue I guess. But why doesn't it show up in activity monitor? It is sorted by CPU usage, and it window IS scrolled all the way up. But alas, ruby is hiding.

I can't help, but I've noticed a similar issue with determining where my RAM is being used. System is near tapped out, but Activity Monitor only lists a fraction of where it's being used.

FYI, Your username is showing, if that kind of thing bothers you.

Why would you ever use Activity Monitor instead of top?

top actually uses a good chunk more CPU than Activity Monitor. It's also a shitty interface in that you have to quit and relaunch if you want to change what it shows. That said, I don't know why Activity Monitor is failing for you. Have you tried clearing out its preferences?
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Aren't there key commands to do this while in top?

You can do some things (like change it to only show current user), but you can't change which columns it shows - and it's still a terrible interface in that the base screen gives you zero hint that even that is possible.

I've only used commands to sort columns, but you're right, the interface is definitely unclear as to what is possible...

Never had a problem with Activity Monitor. Is this a Lion issue?
