It's targeted at the same people who buy Bose, Monster Cable, etc.

The first review I've seen isn't exactly positive.

I thought it was pronounced "BLOWS". Yep Bose is 85 percent hype, and 15 percent lousy speakers.

The 901 series stinks for itself.

I've never heard of a recording studio using them.

There is no reason to buy this thing; where's the innovation?

It's not as elegant as airport extreme as you have to actually plug your iPod in, and it's not as good as a proper stereo system as you can't upgrade it or separate the speakers.

At least with most Apple products, if the tech's not bleeding edge then at least they look good; this can't be said with the iPod hi-fi.

I don't think it's hideously ugly, but it is definitely bland and uninspired. It has handles, but it is so obviously not portable at all. It weighs 14 lbs and the iPod sticks out of the top. Plus, 6 D batteries? That's like 8 bucks.

I hook my iPod up to a pair of $20 computer speakers in my kitchen while I cook or do the dishes. Does the trick just fine.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

LOL @ iPod HI-Fi.

Oh well, maybe Apple creative is purging right now. Gotta get the ocasional junky products out of their system before tackling the important stuff

BTW, how long did Apple spend designing this thing, like a half day or something?
Ok I've been waiting to say that. Feel better now.

Um ya that would be something at least.

This thing is no better or different then taking your audio cable and plugging it into a good/atractive sound system.

A recent worldwide poll is showing 75% more people would buy it if it included:
50% said Guinness
25% said a little indentation in the back so it wouldn't crush my nuts when carrying it.
the last 25% said That thing reminds me a a frigid set of twin boobies from outer-space. I like it!

May as well jump in before the lock to agree with that. It just doesn't have the sort of wow factor that Apple's supposed to provide. Where's the cool new feature that nobody was expecting? The only advantage of this thing over just using a dock is its "portability", and for that, you may as well go with DLO's iBoom, which, admittedly, may be even uglier, but it's 1/3 the price and has an FM radio (I know, nobody likes FM radio but me..)

Well, if it's meant to be portable. I'd rather have a radio for weather info/news if I take something like that out camping. And if you live in a dorm, it would be nice to be able to get the campus radio station too.

I have the AL iM7 pictured above and I can say without question I have no regrets that I didn't wait for Apple's offering. Perhaps it does sound better, but the iM7 has a few things going for it- I think it looks just as good, if not better, the sound is fantastic (I'm no audiophile so YMMV), it's more portable and you can put in on a shelf with stuff on top- no iPod sticking out the top. The remote on the iM7 sucks, but it's usable.

Nice try Apple, but I don't see the advantages for over $150 more than I paid for the iM7.

With loudspeakers it is generally pretty hard to see advantages. You need to hear them. And until we know how they sound nobody can tell whether Apple's loudspeakers are overpriced or not.

This product was not a mistake. The only mistake was to summon Our Steveness to introduce it. If anything steals his thunder, it is this kind of presentations.

It should have been quietly inserted in the Apple store, then wait for the independent reviews to roll in. The Intel mini should have been presented in Jan 9, to ship in March.

Just got it in. Im not impressed with the sound quality. Might need some breaking into though. we have it set up next to the Bose sounddock, and the Sounddock sounds noticeably better.

But im curious as to how it sounds a week from now.

I really doubt there's such thing as breaking in on that type of speakers. If you notice an improvement, it's probably you just getting used to it.

Probably.... but we poped the iPod into the Bose SoundDock(BSD), and it sounded much better.

the hifi had a lot of base coming through with not much of the higher frequencies. when we popped it into the BSD the sound was just right....the higher frequencies were much clearer as well.

it could have something to do with direction...maybe ?...but at that price, u;d think Apple would have made the necessary adjustments.

From a "style" perspective...... i dont know....i personally prefer the Bose. i mean really...having an iPod dock on the top of a speaker ?

Then there's the size issue.....the bose is tiny cimpared to the hifi. I'm almost always partial towards Apple products....but when comparing it to the bose sounddock, and factoring in the price difference. id have to give my vote to the BSD.
