Seems very Alpha to me after a days look see. Very messing follow/invite system and can only find around 40% of the people I'm looking for. Took several goes to follow/be followed with several people.

Still Lady GaGa has a good number of followers already. I wonder why that is?

Apple claim (as is their way) that "my favourite artists will be sure to join Ping!" somehow I doubt this.

It's not an app so I've not started this in the apps thread. So how does everyone think Ping! will pan out.

Personally I predict it will simply vanish from iTunes12 after being unloved for a couple of years.
This space for Hire! Reasonable rates. Reach an audience of literally dozens!

I signed up, but it seems really lame so far.

There are only about 15 or so artists to follow right now.

If all of my favorites start to show up on there it might be cool, but somehow I doubt that's going to happen.

None of my friends share my musical tastes so that's a no go as well.

I haven't even bothered downloading it yet. No interest in the "social" aspect, and I haven't seen enough screenshots to convince me I'm going to like the new improved Album/Artwork column.

I imagine I'll eventually upgrade when they force me to have 10 to make App Store purchases or I absentmindedly download it with some other updates.

Like the new icon though.

The name is also terrible. Ping?

The name doesn't even have anything to do with music.

They are trying too hard to come up with a cute catchy web 2.0 sounding name.

I'm surprised they didn't manage to come up with something missing a vowel or two.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Web 3.0 is going to be all about uppercase letters and removing consonants.

EIEIO is going to be the new hotness. I can feel it now.

It needs to integrate with Facebook. People aren't going to join yet another social network.

I would've preferred iP, despite the obvious connotations. That way you can shout out - "Please, can iP on you?".

But what do I know, I hate social networks.

Surely Shaq shafting Shat shouldn't improve the pong in Ping.

Yeah, after Jobs announced the name, I just looked at the screen with a puzzled look for a few seconds. Horrible name.

Oh, you're missing out.

Apart from the cleaner look (once you revert to horizontal traffic light), it's WAY faster - finally.

Apple's names always seem lame at first, but they also seem to settle in after a while. For example, iPad.

Apparently, facebook's "onerous terms" made that impossible.

I believe it. I also believe that Apple wouldn't compromise.

Apple's thinking is probably along the lines of having a huge userbase of people with iTunes, they download the new version, click on a button and sign up, and 'Boom!'™ there's a huge music social network thats all theirs.

I haven't downloaded the new software onto my Mac yet, I'll be doing that this weekend.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

I think I might have spoken too soon. A couple of my friends are on it now and I am following a number of music industry people. This is actually a lot of fun.

Could get expensive quickly, I bought three albums yesterday.

Hate to say it but brilliant idea. Not the current version mind you, it's rather clumsy right now, but so was Facebook when it started. Though to be honest not allowing them to have their own domain name was a bad choice, and not worth it for a name like Ping... though it's Apple they can change the name in version 12 and then register a domain name.

The idea is great even if they never become even the 10th most popular social networking site, they still win because people will still buy more music if they use the service. Best part is it doesn't have to be ad supported because the whole thing is one freaking big ad! But it's a fun ad.

That said I can see why Facebook would be avoiding letting Apple play in their sandbox, either way it's only going to slow it by a few months. Once Apple's worked out all the kinks, all they need to do is push it a bit more heavily and they'll have a huge user base. If anything this will also draw more people to have iTunes accounts. What'll be funny is when the music industry expects Amazon to start their own music social network.

Also I give it a month before every Indie band has their own profile.

I'd probably have jumped for that a few months ago when I was still on the first intel iMac. On my new one, I'm still enjoying the afterglow of the massive speedbump.

Looks like they had one million people sign up within 48 hours. Not too bad. I wonder how many signed up just to see what it was, and then ditched it and will never look at it again.

AFP: Over one million join Apple's music social network Ping
