Had a hankering for Arby's, and I happened to be near one of the few in the city. Right downtown proper, in this kinda grimy spot underneath a train station.

Thought it looked surprisingly full for a Saturday afternoon. This part of downtown is dead on weekends. When I made the decision to go, I wasn't even sure it was going to be open.

As I get closer, I realize its wall-to-wall Amish. If I wasn't on a mission, I'd have probably passed. Not that I'm an Amishophobe, more an everybodyphobe.

Whatever. I want some. I go in, place my order, and bury myself in my phone. As much as I think the Amish are cool, I feel sorry for them all they can do in this type of situation is talk.

To each other.

After about five minutes, I begin to realize something's amiss. Only one or two Amish are eating.

They had all placed their orders and sat down... I was at the back of a line that stretched three generations. To make matters worse, Arby's crack staff ****s up every single order.

After, and I am not exaggerating in any form or fashion... after thirty minutes, I get my Arby's.

It was actually kind of worth it. Completely hit the spot.

As I'm getting ready to go, an elder Amish waves at an employee and says the most perfectly Amish thing ever.

"You make good food".

That's why I go to Jack in the Box. Arby's curly fries without the Arby's diarrhea.

Yeah, it was always my first stop when flying into Houston. If I have to do fast food it's either Jimmy John's or Pancheros.

I'm now partial to Jersey Mike's in the sub department.

This coming from someone who spent their 20's next to the original Potbelly's.

No Pizza Hut? Or Dominos? I thought they were everywhere. In the world.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

You're right, I think there's a Domino's in town, and a Papa Gino's. The Hut is probably next town over.

However we usually get our pizza from local joints.

We have legit NY pizza here, a cop/chef from NYC, who moved down here to semi-retire, started a small restaurant. It's the honest-to-Allah real article, even down to the crust, and the place is hopping every single day. I get pies from there at least once /week.

I know I've ranted about this before, but with rare exception, Chicago "style" pizza is absolute ****ing garbage. We've been trolling the entire country for decades.

Thankfully, I'm within the delivery radius of a decent New York place.

Honestly is Pizza Hut even pizza. I seem to remember eating a LOT of it about 25 years ago when I lived in London and it being awesome. Went a few times with my girls (the ones CTP feels sorry for) and while they seemed happy (they chose it) it was completely and unendingly awful.

Dominos seems the new fave. All the kids like it. It arrives fast and seems to have become edible lately. There's certainly money in them thar Domino's franchises. A local lad here started work in one branch when he was 14, he now owns four local franchises and is halfway through building himself a multi million pound country house.

5 guys may be overhyped, better than bk of course but not saying much... but their fries are excellent.

Uno's is ok once in a while but it is fork pizza. Not sure if any of our local places qualify as "Real NY Pizza" as we have our own Italians and nothing is advertised that way. Back in the day in college the best local chain was Pizzaria Regina.

Probably my favorite fast food burger. We're getting one this fall.

Maybe it's nostalgia from going to Pizza Hut as a kid, but I still go crazy over a pan crust Pepperoni Lover's. My wife thinks it's kind of gross but I could eat an entire Large myself in one sitting.

The Five Guys burger is workable, though a little overdone for my taste. The cheese is not very good, nor is the bun. I guess it's better if you pile tons of shit on it, but I don't see the point if you can't shoot the thing straight.

Their fries are overrated, and the serving is sized for an elephant.

Best part is the coke machine.

I find Pizza Huts to be variable. If the crust is "frittered" properly, it's not bad.

Fortunately sometime in the last few years they added a "mini" option, which is sized for a...smaller elephant.

Best part is the coke machine.
The mix your own kind? I think I've seen that at Wendy's.

The large bag serves a family of 4, unless someone insists on the spicy fries and we get two smalls.

Variety of soda is nice, but we don't usually eat in. Water is free at home.

They had them at the last movie theatre I went to.

Right outside the door to the actual theatre, which was nice.

We're lucky to have several original Roy Rogers in the DC area. Their fries taste like eh old style McDonalds fries, and to get that classic Roast beef too! MMMMMMMM!!! I still miss Jack n the Box, and Shakeys Pizza.

Dominos have really raised their game. Their iOS app is really good, their pizzas are entirely passable, their cookies are excellent. Their prices are kinda steep, especially for thin crust pizzas which I like the best.

My son's fiancé is from northern Indiana, which is pretty-much Amish-USA. She told me of a local Mexican restaurant where the parking lot is regularly filled with Amish buggies. I told her, I must have a photo of that, asap.

Why wouldn't they?
As far as I know, there aren't any dietary restrictions in Amish belief. They just emphasize growing and making it yourself. Some communities even allow alcohol.

They do, and its great value when you have a big family, or even if its just two or three of you, but as with all food there are no particularly great offers when its just you. Unless you can eat two whole pizzas by yourself.

I had a good one a couple blocks away, but the grocery store next door burned down and it was kaput. The slightly farther one is not very good.

I think I know this place - near Glendale? If not, there's another guy from nyc who makes a great pie - I was impressed. Better tasting than any of the pizza joints on the upper west side for sure.
