Also announced, the Sun is hot.

I thought everyone knew this? Gloria Vanderbilt's unwed son? He could have had any woman he wanted but hasn't been seen with any?

I don't recall ever seeing Cronkite with a woman either. OMG Cronkite WG!

What I like about the statement linked in the OP, is the sense of Cooper's journalistic integrity.

He says it best

He adds that he's always been this open with family, friends and colleagues. "In a perfect world, I don't think it's anyone else's business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted," Cooper says.

I have terrible gaydar. The only reason I knew Anderson was gay is Seth McFarlane made an awesome joke about it at the roast of David Hasselhoff.

Why are you guys jumping on me, anyway? I'm the last person to care if he's gay, I was just saying it's no surprise.

I think there's a difference. Trying too hard is objectively a problem. I don't really see it with her though.

In what sense?

The dissonance of her having a show while supposedly not being popular, or something else?

I'm sure it'll surprised to hear I've seen the show. It didn't really have that vibe at all. The "D-List" theme is about where she fits into the internal pecking order of the celebrity industry, not that she was unpopular.

Being D-List indicates that she's not that popular. If she were bigger she wouldn't be D-List.

I watched her show, and the first season was kind of fun. However I stopped when she became kind of D+ and obnoxious about it.

Yes, I think that's it. Or maybe I'm scarred from her Seinfeld appearance many years ago, never thought she'd be like that in real life. She just irks that crap out of me.

There's what the name implies, and there's what the show portrays. I'm saying they're different.

I could tell Anderson Cooper was gay the first time I saw him on TV. He seems like a nice guy and he's even shown he's not always left-of-center in his reporting, so I give him credit there. But I thought he came out formally months ago when he giggled like a schoolgirl uncontrollably and couldn't get through that one news story.

More generally, is it really necessary for any of these potentially or presumably gay stars to formally "come out" to the media? If they want to eliminate all doubt, why don't they just show up with a same sex partner to a media event and be proudly done with it? I think the way (some) homosexuals continue to make a big deal about formally coming out of the closet makes it seem like they're unintentionally reinforcing a social stigma of separateness as it relates to their orientation. Anyone else know what I mean? America in general has become much more accepting of all sorts of diversity including homosexuality. We even seem to already have had a gay president long ago anyway, our 15th president. Is the gay community still caught in the past to some extent? Then again, maybe I'm missing the reason why and just looking at it from a straight guy's perspective.

Yes. You're asking for normality.

The problem is that normality can only be achieved if there has been sufficient counter-balance to the homophobic agenda.

That'll take a while.

@Big Mac

I'd say the main thing when it comes to celebrities is there's a perception they weren't candid about their sexuality in order to forward their career.

When Anderson was in New Orleans after Katrina, I thought it was obvious he was gay. When he was in Iraq, I thought it was obvious. When... Anyway, I think the only "issue" is why he made it "official" when he did. As for the "in order to forward his career," with the way infotainment is managed and promoted, being a reporter who is openly gay is a good way to stay in Cleveland for your whole career. The fact that a reporter is different (other than being female with a good smile, good hair and a good figure) is something that is either "a selling point" (for a niche market) or a life sentence of local news jobs.

Finally, I recall the Harrison Ford .gif posted in the Sarah Palin/turtle thread...

That sounds a lot more formal than sending an email to a blog, which is what he did.

As for "showing up as a couple," many celebs have partners and spouses who are not celebs and have no interest in being in the limelight. For instance, until Natalie Portman was married, we never saw her at an event with a date, though I'm pretty sure she's had a few boyfriends.

And yes, celebs (and politicians!) need to expressly "come out," because the media generally knows not to comment about those who are publicly in the closet, but are known to be gay to family, friends, and co-workers.

I'm not quite sure what else you'd call, say, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt charging a bajillion dollars to do photo shoot of them with their baby for People Magazine.

So consider your dreams to have come true.

Not a dream, but I'm suggesting heterosexuals flood the news with their statement of being heterosexual just to show how stupid it is to declare one's sexual preference to the world.

Heterosexuals do this. Day in and day out. Actually, it happens so often you stopped noticing it.

Again, how are Angelina and Brad not declaring their sexuality by posing with their infant? Is there some subtext to this I'm missing which leaves open the option they are in fact homosexuals?

You're being too rational. Everyone's supposed to be straight, so our otherwise sexually obsessed culture isn't sex crazed it's just the gays. Bastards want to get married like normal people! They should just shut up about their relationships, and when we imply that they are heterosexual they should just awkwardly look at the ground and mumble like a god fearing person!
