I have not until yesterday used or logged into Apple via my Apple ID and discovered I'm unable to, since the new password requirement is 8 characters and numerals and I only have 6. How ought I procede ?

You may have to call Apple Support. What's on the screen when it denies you to login?

I doubt I can call Apple Support I'm 2 years beyond the Apple Care plan!
The login window simply says in red below the password space "All passwords must be 8 characters and numbers". Typing in my 6 letter password leads back to the red letter warning. No joy!

You can call Apple for such matters as it doesn't involve your Mac. It simply involves your Apple ID.

You can also log a problem via Apple's support website.
