My furnace struggled until the sun came up. School and day care were both closed so I was home with the kids. We kept the fireplace on all day and have made it work.

Radiators usually keep it at 72, so 65 is their version of the struggle.
That’s tolerable, but my place (unusually) also has a furnace, and since I don’t get a medal for not using it, on days like this I let it do some fill-in work.
Been in shorts during the whole freezeageddon.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before in this thread, but I love this weather fact.
This kind of cold requires snow pack. Without snow, the ground is darker, and thus absorbs more heat. Without snow, it generally stays above 0F.

"Albedo" is the term I learned in my astronomy class.
Albedo is a non-dimensional, unitless quantity that indicates how well a surface reflects solar energy

I was this close to mentioning albedo.
I learned about it from the various solar system generators I’ve played with in the past.

Shoutout to SimEarth, which taught me all sorts of strange terms (including that one).

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Here is what IBM has been up to
January 8, 2019
IBM announced today that they will be introducing the world’s highest-resolution global weather forecasting model later in 2019--the IBM Global High-Resolution Atmospheric Forecasting System (GRAF). The model will be the first hourly-updating weather model that is able to predict something as small as a thunderstorm virtually anywhere on the planet.

Usually things look kinda nasty after a snow melt, but for whatever reason, this hit next level grody.

The streets around here are starting to look like there was a naval bombardment. Pretty amazing how badly even new streets are falling apart now.

Do they do asphalt or concrete where you are?
They switched from concrete here when I was young, which I’m pretty sure was a horrible idea.

Pretty exclusively asphalt. Been that way forever. Even the repairs and re-paving on the interstates are asphalt now.

Ovah he'ah we got holes big enough to bury yo cah
Seriously though there are several sections of parking lots and roads close to the stores near the mall that have HUGE potholes. You drive into one of those and your fender is toast.
It wasn't my fault; however, as Clarence and Frank from SWA would say, "That was the ass fault."

A bunch of us went to Disney World in the last week of March. My sister got back to her home in southern Michigan just fine. The next day, there was almost an inch of snow. The change from Florida weather to Michigan weather was understandable, but snow that late is very unusual for that area...

How do you know he wasn't referring to those ancient antennas, where snow can get through? Everyone knows shark fins are in

It’s a balmy 9° with a -4° windchill.
I guess February in November is the “new weather” in the thread title.

11 here. Similar windchill. The old heatpump is certainly getting a workout this week. It's been running continuously since about midnight.
My son and his wife, who live in far northern Indiana (lake-effect snow land) just happened to have planned a week-long getaway down to Gulf Shores, AL. this week. So, while their home is buried in snow, they're enjoying some lovely 70° weather, and sending us pics just to rub it in.

Let’s tell Reader and Glenn it’s time to change their tires and see if they fall for it.

I'm not changing my tires! But it IS quite cool here, much cooler than seasonable. San Antonio got UP TO 45 today, but on Monday it went from a high of 75 to 39 by midnight, with a low of 32 at about 8:30 AM Tuesday. It got up to 44 yesterday, and the overnight low was only 41. But the drizzly rain made it all feel worse than the temperature implied.
It is pretty amusing to see folks here bundle up when it gets below 70, but it's sad when it really does get cold.
