I have a G3 All in One that is 3 years old. Yesterday, it started turning on and off by itself at random intervals. It has 320 MG of RAM running System 9.1. I have a Iomega 2 GIG Jaz drive connect to the SCSI port.

I exchanged the power cord, the keyboard, tightened the SCSI connections and replaced the Power Strip it was plugged into. The problem still remains.

When I restart it, the start up chime sounds several times, like I'm resetting the PRAM.

My system clock reset to August 1956 when I exchanged the power cord. Could these "symptoms" be caused by a dead battery?

Any help will be appreciated

Dear Joeswell,

I am certain that your battery is dead. However, I don't know what could cause your Mac turn On/Off automatically. You may check and see whether someone had tweak the Energy Saver ccomtrol panel. You can also try getting a new battery. Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. I will replace the battery. I changed the settings on the energy saver panel. Is there a preference file I should trash too? I think it has stopped turning on and off by itself except when waking from sleep. When it "wakes" from sleep, it restarts several times, like when it's resetting the PRAM. Could this be caused by the battery being dead?

I adjusted the settings so it will never sleep. I have a screen saver program that activates when there has been no activity for 15 minutes, so so far so good.

Your advice has been very helpful. Thank you very much!
