One major difference between the DMR and BR is that you need to be scoped in to get headshots consistently, otherwise after a few shots from the hip the accuracy gets real bad.

They probably wanted to get the ranking system closer to MW2, rather than based on skill. But from what I heard the skill system is still involved in there somewhere. You seem to get CR for everything.

There's skill based matchmaking, but it appears its completely hidden now as its the only way to stop people fro manipulating it.

I hadvent looked at bungie.net yet but I was hoping they would revamp it for Reach, it was great for halo 3 already but I'm always up for more stat tracking

Speaking of CR their unlock system looks retarded. When I started the game it showed three visors - two of which were locked. I unlocked a fourth last night, but technically thats not correct. I now see a fourth that is also locked. So it looks like there' double-unlocking going on (though what's the point on hiding it in the first place?). They also don't seem to tell you how to unlock them.

Geez, I thought there was only two ways of unlocking them (microsoft unlock code or CR), and didn't have a clue there was some sort of double-unlocking going on.

You sure you're not confusing unlocking the Avatar awards with unlocking in-game armor? I find that unlikely, but now-adays with achievements, avatar awards, challenges and now this new armor buying system it gets confusing. OR, just thought of this, do you have to uunlock the item in gameplay, BEFORE you can purchase it (unlocking it again in a way). I thought you could just purchase armor items as soon as you have the CR for it.

Alright, time for the good stuff:

Carnage

This falls in line with something I had wanted back during 3 days – namely a way to see how the flow of the game went (primarily, lead changes)
Here, unfortunately, our crushing victory is borked for some reason.

Still, there's a smaller separate one for each player. Its a little dicey, because 9.3 isn't the most useful benchmark for kills.
Also visible are some new stats – average distances that kills and deaths occurred at. Here you can see the only way to kill me was with a melee.
(Not sure what the rating means yet)

k/d spread

Feels like they missed their own point by leaving out the dips, but overall, its nice to see a run of four games where I went +3 or better.

Streaks

They did something similar with wins and losses. As you can see I am a streaky (yet consistent) mother****er. 4-4-2-4-3.

...and finally

It's still not a simplified number, but at least they give you a percentage when you mouse over, which is progress.
You'll still have to do math if you want a normal win/loss record.

There's a minimum of 8 people to mouse-overper game, and once you switch to carnage, a minimum of 8 people to tab to look at their weapon use. bungie hasn't quite figured out the most efficient way to dole out all this info.

My main usability gripe is that the <back forward> buttons for matches are atop the useless blue v red pic when you spend all your time at the bottom looking at the match players (and that on a 21" iMac I need to scroll because of that huge useless graphic)

I almost forgot.

When it split the teams APsolid and I had a DMR battle that I ended up winning. He cried 'bullsh!t' and then I ran over and tea-bagged the shit out of him,. He was not amused.

One of the things that we really want to do a better job with Reach is [highlighting] the guys out there who do like their Halo maybe differently than, for instance, I like mine. I like head shots, I like killing people with a sniper rifle, I like all that stuff. But there are guys that we've encountered along the way who just love to drive; they just want to drive people around. We haven't really done a great job of reinforcing that kind of behavior in the past and the Commendation system is one way we're doing that.
From an article that is older than god I just read.

and so it starts...
Fatty o ramas to come?
So with the games of BTB last night whats Dakar's feelings around vehicle combat compared to H3?

EDIT: got a little further in the campaign only to find a new armor ability i must of not used before... regenerating health bubble shield (thats for you fatty)

EDIT 2: my early bet is this tread overtakes MW2

Geez, if that was the case, I'd be waaaayyyyy ahead of you. I've only had one positive match (I definitely kept the movie of that one - it's in my fileshare). I had a few break even. But I think most of my matches have been negative so far.

But most of the matches have been fun so far, with the exception of a couple.

Nice to see the return of Blood Gulch.

Snipers must love Halo:Reach. Most of the maps I played have good Sniper spots - Paradiso has a nice sniper ledge on the mountain, The Spire map is a sniper map (took me awhile to see there was a HUGE tower).

I'm pretty sure they put slicks on the warthogs, because they just have zero traction. It's really sad. I can still feel when its getting pelted by DMR shots, too.

I didn't realize there was so little difference between the MW2 and H3 thread, but it took a year for the H3 thread to accumulate 40 pages. So I'm going to go with no.

Two things:

• Apparently I have to hold the melee button to perform an assassination
• Flaming helmets came with the legendary edition. we've met no bungiers. which explains why they've been so all over the place in quality

Observations:

• Gotta wonder about matchmaking quality when it decided subie and crosbie were the best guys to compete against the four better Halo players in the group.
• I think it's harder to enjoy Halo when you're losing (Compared to MW2). We ended up closing the night out with Firefight because we were sick of multi, but I looked at our w/l (and my k/d), and it wasn't anything terrible (4-4, not counting the game against each other and our final game before firefight).
• I'm not sure I've played all of them, but the maps are terrible. Particularly in Invasion. That map was as wide-open as they come (and fatty thinks a bunch are remakes, too).

I agree with you that the maps have alot of open areas and not much cover. Paradiso, in the rock area provides some cover, but there are alot of open areas.

I'll have to check out Invasion this weekend. I haven't played it. I've stayed in my comfort area of Big Team Battle.

I dont question the matchmaking YET, I just think there isn't a whole lot of data to use, I don't think any of us have played enough games to have a solid average

And about firefight, I thought that single match stuff would be boring but I actually really enjoyed it, especially the rockets and jetpacks ( maybe because I was getting every medal in the world)

Early on in either our second or third BTB game I got booted for betrayel, I hit a warthog head on with a ghost around a blind turn and both of us died, how does that kid have the option to boot me? I don't remember it beingthat way in H3

Yeah, the betrayal option is coming up after one kill for some reason. I had a game with fatty earlier in the night where I somehow got to double boot, ended up finishing a close game of team snipers 2 on 4, which was way to our advantage.

Apparently he's going Stage 2.

---

Euthyphro emailed me at work. I told him I was obligated to post it here.

Remember when I first really started getting into MW2, and we had some emails where you were giving me tips and advice? And then we had a gaming session or two where I watched and you gave me advice? Well, I come to drink from the fountain of your wisdom once more, oh gaming guru. How the f-ck do I stop sucking at Halo?

You'd have close quarters fighting, because without the DMR, all the weapons are only good at short distances (except the sniper rifle).

I think Euthyphro, and the other from that crew are still stuck in the MW2 mindset.

Halo requires a much bolder approach and a much more aggressive style of play. Hanging back nets you nothing, no special weapons no special vehicles no special areas. I'e done well at Reach, and Halo in general, because I play balls to the wall. Even if your shields are down and somebody is in front of you, all you have to do is jump around a little, spam some nades and hope for the best. It's a whole different approach from a game like MW2.

I'm surprised that Subie still hated it so much even in the presence of a large party. If a group of friends isn't enough to hit the fun factor for him, I don't think anything will.

Oh yeah, about those maps, I've seen remakes of:

Sanctuary (Halo 2)
Ivory Tower (Halo 2)
Blood Gultch (Halo 2 and 1)
Ascension (Halo 2)

I'm sure there are more.

The re-using of map designs, and that f**king loadout menu are my two biggest gripes so far.

Befroe Halo 2, and the BR, Halo was more of a CQB type of game with sniping thrown in.
