Can the side buttons on the Mighty Mouse be mapped independently of each other? I Googled but didn't see anything indicating that I can map different functions to each of the two side buttons.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

No. They are a single "squeeze" button, and they are the single most annoying feature of the Mighty Mouse.

Yup... I disabled mine immediately. Always activated when you didn't want it and couldn't use them when you did want to.

Um… I actually really like the ‘squeeze’ function on the Mighty Mouse. I’ve got it mapped to Exposé’s “All Windows” function, and the trackball click mapped to “Show Desktop” (I thought it was pretty stupid having it mapped to Dashboard since I rarely use it). I should also come out and admit that I have had zero problems with the right-click as well.

On the subject of mice, I was actually pretty underwhelmed by the Magic Mouse. The scrolling was really nice on it, but the two-finger swipe was a pretty poor substitute for squeeze and trackball click functionality that’s gone MIA.
