Well, I have some interesting responses to my plea for help regarding the life of my iBook battery (under 10.2.1), and I've read some other good stuff on the xlr8yourmac site.
I've just run a test: fully charged battery, removed the airport card, disabled networking, reduced processor thingy (?), half screen brightness, and just left it running (screen on but nothing actually happening on the machine). After 1 hour 6 mins it was down to 7mins remaining and the warning popup appeared - so I ignored it......1 HOUR and 10 mins later, the iBook finally went to sleep.
Hmmm I thought the incorrect reporting bug was fixed in 10.2.1.
Any thoughts?

I have a month old 700MHz 14" iBook with 30GB drive and RAM upgraded to 384MB... currently running 10.2.1...
Have been using it off battery power at school for the past two weeks.. I get decent battery times of ard 4hrs 30 to 5hrs at times, surfing off ethernet connection, screen brightness half down.. and even listening to MP3s using iTunes...
Is it a common problem for the battery to die off? I had a Pismo 400 before with the battery dying off after a year.. I had hardly used the battery more than 20 times? All the while it was mainly plugged into the adapter... with the battery in...
My main worry now is that would my battery in the iBook die off if I keep using the mains? Should I take the battery out to prolong its life? My iBook is a desktop replacement so it will usually remain desk bound...

it's good to drain the battery once a month, particularly if it's on the adapter a lot.

i bought my ibook at the end of may, 2001. i used to get great battery life out of it, but recently it got so poor, that i broke down and bought a new battery. the difference is amazing. i now get about 3.5 hours with airport, max brightness, and itunes playing while surfing, or writing with word. these batteries don't have too long before they start deteriorating, it would seem.

I have a theory about so-called short battery lifespans of computers plugged in all the time. Someone who knows better can feel free to correct me.
The theory:
The circuitry in the battery will charge the battery whenever it gets below a certain point. With the computer plugged in all the time, this will happen countless times over a long period (mine has been plugged in for 1 1/2 years). The problem is that the battery's lifespan is partly defined by the number of re-charges it is able to receive. If it is able to be recharged 1000 times, that limit could possibly be excedded in a year (or whatever).
So, after 1 1/2 years I have a bettery that lasts about 20 minutes. I wouldn't complain except that the batteries are so dammed expensive!
