Two: Do you remember where you were when Elvis died? (There's an Elvis documentary on the TV behind me).

when asked about 'colored people' and his thoughts on the subject, he famously replied words to the effect that the only thing he wanted/needed from black folk is that they buy his records...

he just wrote 'em off, basically

That they buy his records after he "borrowed" their music? There's an interesting story by Alice Walker, whom I generally do NOT like at all, about a character called Traynor, read Elvis, and his dealings with African American music. It's called "1955," and although it may be historically wrong--so is Shakespeare's Henry V, for that matter--it bears thinking about.
