I'm curious, with people bumping and supercharging and turbo-fanning their machines, what do they actually do with their flavoured friend when it's running?

Me? QTVR, Photoshop(as digital darkroom) and Video/Quicktime stuff.

My bondi-blue baby: 300Mhz, 40Gigs, 256Megs AND SCSI/TV. Yum!

I do everything from photo editing to finances to making CD's, shopping on the internet, etc.

My computer is an extension of myself, so it's hard to detail what I do with it. It's kinda like asking, "what do you do with your left arm?"

great topic, Feathers.

i find that i mainly just surf the net and DL from the mac-related newsgroups.
Rev B, 160 Mb Ram.

today i left the iMac on when i left for work.
amazingly,
it was still Dl-ing 8 hrs later when i got back!
...maybe earthlink/mindspring is getting more reliable!

question for advise from U, Feathers.
i was thinking of getting a wizard card from OWC...not sure if i should.
the only game i presently own that may look good with it is TR2.

i noticed U have the formac scsi tv card.
tell me the great things about that item,
if U will.
I already have access to a scsi burner at my parents house.
they got an ancient 6115 upgraded with a sonnet G3 240 Mhz nubus card.

thanx for any enlightenment.

When Im on campus, I use it to download movies onto, then burn them as VCDs, then sell them to people with DVD players for 8 bucks each. HEhehe.

2. Play way to much UT
3. Burn CDs
3. Listen to mp3s
4. Currently making a video family tree using imovie.
5. Occasionally play DVDs.

my setup:
imac dv/se, 192mb ram, zip 100, altec/lansing speakers

my uses:
audio editing w/ peak, pushing pixels w/ photoshop, downloading *legal* (cough) mp3s (3.5 gigs and still growing!), surfing the 'net at a screaming 48000bps, watching the occasional dvd, and irritating the hall out of my neighbors. (altec/lansing speakers + 3.5 gigs of mp3s = irritated neighbors!)

I use my iMac Rev/B with 96MB of memory (this is my second replacement for the first iMac Rev/A I bought on August 15th, 1998) ( 64MB of RAM bought from MacGuru's about the same date.) for work. I update iMac2Day with it, do a lot of real work for MacNN and also keep up with the family finances.

My wife surfs the internet, and my new puppy chews on the cords (lots of misc USB cables running here and there). The Cat like to nap on top of the scanner (provided by ARTEC). I also use it to burn backup disks of part of the MacNN network from time to time.

All in all, a sound investment for two solid years.

In fact, I am thinking that it's about time for an upgrade, but instead of actually buying a new computer, I'm thinking of just buying a NewerTech or PowerLogix upgrade card and a new HD for the iMac Rev/B since it has IRDA support and that's important for my Palm, you see I still can't bring myself to buy a $40 connector to connect the Palm cradle (serial) that was "included for full synchronous support with my PC". What a rip off. Plus, if I aim my iMac right, I am sure I can figure out how to change the channels on my TV one of these days with it

But seriously, the IR port makes for a great remote control when doing presentations. I even have video out on this old iMac via the iPresenter from PowerR computing. Not sure if they still sell it though.

iMac 350

Strictly leisure and internet - NO WORK ALLOWED!

It's also the test-pad for things like the CD's that come with the various Mac magazines.

Additionally it provides a comfort zone as a back-up just in case some catastrophe should befall my main Mac (which is devoted to work.)

iMac DVSE

Download MP3, mix em, re mix em, burn em, label em, shrink wrap em, sell em in stores.
School work (lots of it)
Internet (Forums and GUI downloads mostly, keep up on world news)
DVD movies mirror on a 36" TV
Soundjam plays all day (and sometimes night) with plugins mirrored on TV.
Watch streaming video (CNN, Weather, Movie Trailers)

well I guess I don't do much at all with my Mac after all.

The iProRaidTV from Formac is First Class!!! I have a TEAC 8x24 burner and a Minolta Dimage Film Scanner hooked up to it, not to mention playing vid's through it in a convenient corner of the screen when I'm online.

I also echo John's comments about the IrDA, I talk to my eMate that way, it's brilliant. I'd love to get another RevB 'cos I have another iProRaid unopened ready to go aswell.

Still a bit undecided about the NeverTechnology upgrade though.

Ca$h! What have you been told about copyright? Go to your room and don't come out until you've recognised the error of your ways, mister man!

I use my 350 MHz iMac primarily for word processing and speadsheeting (about 6 hours a day). It also prints about 200 pages of output a day (another couple of hours). I occasionally do some scanning, archiving and CD-burning (less than an hour a day).

About 10 hours a day it is crunching SETI@home work units. When looking at it that way, I guess it mostly works for SETI.

I DID use my mac to edit video, sweeten audio, compositing, and working with photoshop, but since there is something seriously wrong with it for the past several days it.. hmm, well it makes a great paperweight, and I can sit in front of it for many hours simulating the motions of editing video. In fact, if you are in a well lit room and the monitor is off, you can actually see yourself in the screen. I've performed Hamlet, 12 Angry Men (I played the other eleven), and I can pull off a mean first act of "Duck Soup". If you stay up for over 46 hours and talk to the screen, it talks back. First it says it misses you and then it laughs at you. It tells me, "Hahaha... you can no longer control me. YOU are MY puppet, my host body to become more human, more mac friendly." God, please give me my mac back.

Top ten style:

10. Watch very small DVD's*
9. Attempt to learn programming
8. Play MP3's and catalog my old CD's
7. 24/7 wireless Internet thanks to AirPort
6. 24/7 print server thanks to PrinterShare
5. Word Processing and DTP
4. Play PlayStation games
3. Web design and graphic design
2. eMail and surf the web
1. I can't believe no one mentioned this before, eBay!

I made so much money on eBay last year, I could buy an iBook!

What would I add? A DV camera for video editing and capture.

* And most of all, I would like to trade the little DVD experience for the big screen DVD experience. Apple's next product should be a wireless AirPort TV/video adapter.

What do I do with it? Well, I surf alot, tons of email, work on my thesis, keep track of finances, spend tons of cash on ebay, get my news, download all the MP3's I can, swipe the occasional movie now and then, make fun of feathers, plot to take over the world, and work on my books (one fiction, one non- soon coming to a bookstore near you ), poetry, and short stories. I also draw up my lesson plans, write tests and assignments, and keep track of grades (but alot of that I do on my work PC also). Other than that, it's strictly porn.... Oh yeah, I alomost forgot. Seti@home!!

hmmm.

I suppose I should say freelance work, via Photoshop and Illustrator. Or my %^*(&) website. But mostly, I end up:

Surfing--mac sites, funny things, airfare, online shopping (check out deals at rei-outlet.com!)

Email with the world

Offloading digipix from my Kodak 280

bad poetry

My roommate uses it for work--word processing.

Her daughter uses it the most, to play kiddie games borrowed from the library--blues clues, would you believe... A 4-yr-old can run my mac... literally! She tells her mom... "hit apple-Q, mom!"

I mostly use it to stay up to 3am playing Tomb Raider (YES, finally done with 2!) or Harry the Handsome Executive, which, tho simple, is oddly addicting... stupid robots. I haven't broken down and gotten Myth or Unreal yet, cause I figure I was getting enough carpal tunnel from TRII... like Myth tho.
