Any way to have the desktop picture change at each start up? I tried it the old way. dragging a folder of pictures , but no luck.

I have tried this too, (Dragging a folder of pictures to the window). It does not seem to work. Maybe there is a hack to make it work (along with so many other things in OS X) but I don't know what it is.
Oh well. Maybe the figure you wont be doing a lot of restarting of the OS. It would be nice if it could change randomly at log-in though...

Here's a thought -- haven't tried it yet.
The desktop picture is controlled by com.apple.finder plist in you Library/Preferences The relevant property is BackgroundPictureURL in the DesktopViewOptions dictionary.
One could write a script that randomly chose from the available files in /Library/Desktop\ Pictures and put the script into the .logout file.
Just to show I am still a long way to go on the learning curve, here are two questions:
1. How do you use defaults write com.apple.finder to change the BackgroundPictureURL since it is part of DesktopViewOptions?
2. How do you generate a random number from the command line? I would like that to put into a script to randomly pick a line out of a list of the available picture files.
