i'm home...
i did it!
went to the tampa apple store
typing on her now
bought the 17"
and the airport extreme
wireless in my kitchen
very excited about that
not even sure where to begin
thanks to everyone for allaying my fears this morning after having suffered from all the negative comments about the computer
she is fine so far
bought it stock
the 4200rpm and 512K
more memory to come/when it comes in to the store
no hot spots
no dead p;ixels that i can see at this point
don't really want to look for any
and now i am trying to run her down to sleep with the plug out to calibrate the battery and i have to go out tonight
plans from a long time ago with the neighbors
can't take her with me
think i'll do starbucks later and see how that goes

thanks again
more later

Congratulations--I'm finding it harder and harder to resist getting one!

I recommend SuperCal for getting the best contrast/color out of any display--it creates a new color profile in the list (takes a while, but it walks you through the steps), which you can use or not as you see fit:
http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12756

And I consider this another must-have: the best (highly customizable) menu-bar controller (and song identifier) for iTunes:

Print that rebate PDF here, if it's the edu deal:

is that a combined rebate for the ipod and other items? or just straight for the ipod? that would be very nice if for the ipod alone! smile

congrats on your new baby! hope you enjoy and have fun. . . .as it sounds like you are.

Very very nice! congrats!!!! But yea... married that long and your wife never cooks still.... hmmm.... food most of cost you a lot of money to eat out everyday. Your family reminds me of "Married with Children" hehehe. But I'm sure your wife and kids are nothing like them. I hope... hehehe. But hey, it's the love that counts, not if the person can cook or not hehehe.

not quite "married with childre" but i think you could get a nice sitcom out of my home situation and that of my sister's family.... etc...

thanks so much EVERYONE for all of your help... i'm awake and loving this powerbook. i had fun with the friends last night but missed my baby terribly.

i DID buy the pocket pro mouse by kensington despite the mixed reviews and it was been a terrific purchase.
http://www.kensington.com/html/1766.html

try it out if you haven't... very nice
today, more software loading, more customization, more great times with the powerbook and with this forum.

glad i took the plunge... i'm NOT going to look back

take care
thanks again

I am temped to get the Logitech wireless pocket mouse. Beautiful design, and I am not hearing good things about Bluetooth at all. Congrats and enjoy your new stuff.

What are the problems with Bluetooth? Are the a certainty forever, or early issues with certain configs?

If I was buying a PowerBook mouse today, it would probably be the 5-button Belkin bluetooth for $80 (coming Oct. 1). I don't know if it comes with any driver software or not (if not, only games could use 3 of the 5 buttons), but unlike Logitech and MS bluetooth mice, it officially supports Mac:

http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release...lease_id=56330

And I would certainly not buy a NON-bluetooth wireless mouse: then you must carry a transmitter pod, often attached to cable! MORE annoying than a corded mouse. (But OK for desktop use--just not for travel.)

I really wish Kensington made a 5+ button mouse that was pocket-sized for travelers.

The only problem I have with bluetooth is my PB does not have it built in. I need the blue tooth adapter. I was just thinking if I bought the Kensington mouse, it comes with the wireless usb adapter.

Congrats

I love the Tampa store. I go there every other day to play with the lappies. But now I'm waiting for delivery of my own 15" so my trips can become somewhat less frequent

and now i am trying to run her down to sleep with the plug out to calibrate the battery
So, while you are charging it up, you can use it, or do you have to sit and wait for it to completely charge before you can start draining the battery? I ordered the 12" PB and this will be my first Mac EVER! I ordered Sept 6, had my order delayed twice (Oct 3 now), and am so anxious to use it that I think I'll burst if I have to sit there and wait for four hours while it charges in front of me

Thanks

I have had my 17, 1.33 for about 36 hours now...mine is just too perfect!!

No pixel probs anywhere. ( I bought it in the Apple store and opened the box right in the store and installed Pixel Check from a pocket drive..:-)

This is SUCH a nice step up from a titanium!!!

I am waiting on a 512 stick to come in, then I will bench it with the new 7200 I put in it......Zooomie-Zoom, Zoom!!

....The kids LOVED watching Monsters, Inc on it
