I like most beers (except Keystone and Fosters. People who drink that stuff should be shot, unless they are broke college students). I am out of beer and want to buy some. Any personal recommendations?

So there is this large beer convention, with all the breweries represented. After a long day of seminars on malts and finding the proper brewing temperature, a large group decided to go to a bar.

The Anheiseur Busch representative steped to the bar and proudly proclaimed, "Give me a Bud, Barkeep!"

The representative from Miller followed suit, "Miller Lite, my friend!"

This continued, with each of the brewery representatives ordering up their own company's brew.

Finally, it was the Guiness representative's turn. He saddled up a barstool and asked for water. The rest of the representatives were shocked, as was the bartender.

In his Irish accent, he simply stated, "If none of the rest of you are going to order a beer, why should I?"

Whatever. The U.S. is full of microbreweries that are brewing quality beer. In case you don't know, beer is meant to be consumed fresh, close to the source, not exported, saved, and socked away.

So just because we export swill (because for some strange reason the world really wants to drink it) doesn't mean that there is no good beer in the U.S.

And if you don't believe me, look me up when you are here. I'll buy.

Guinness Dark Stout. If I feel like having something light or want to rinse my mouth, a Bud or Corona will do. But I just love a freshly tapped keg of Guinness.

I find it bizarre that in the US there are alcohol limits on beer. Anyone have any insight on this?

I assume it's the same reasons as in Norway, misguided christian morals combined with a misguided belief that more alcohol available to the public the more alcoholics. The claim that less people become alcoholics because they can't get good beer, or buy beer in stores after 20 in the weekdays, 18 on saturdays and not at all on sundays is pretty far fetched. Norway's alcohol-politics are a trainwreck...

Some states in the US still have laws like that - Sunday is for going to church, not drinking, some say.
Are there alcohol limits on beer in Norway too?

My favorite is Bass, but if you can get hold of some Bell's then you are in for a treat. It is only available in the Midwest, USA. They make great Ale, Porter and Stout.

There aren't any limits on alcohol content in the US.

Check out this beer: Sam Adam's Triple Bock

And, all their beer's alcohol content page:

EDIT: I forgot to add, I hate Sam Adam's beer.

If you really want good, fresh beer, MAKE IT YOURSELF!!!

Seriously, it is pretty cheap to do, the quialty control is whatever you want, and you can make any style you like!

If interested, go to: http://www.northernbrewer.com/ and their forum page.

Yeah, I like Bass because I have perfected the art of being able to consume large quantities of it and it is available pretty much everywhere. Bell's is also a favorite, but not always available. I love the Bell's Amber Ale and Pale Ale.

At home it's usually Guinness or Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout. Nothing beats a good microbrew, though. One of the best I've ever had was a Guatemalan Coffee Stout brewed at the Bluecat Brewpub in Rock Island, IL. It was like drinking a great cup of espresso and a Guinness at the same time--perfect.

Ahh, Sprecher is excellent. Their Bavarian lager is another one of my favorites. They make some damn fine root beer, too.

But does Leinenkugels really qualify as a microbrew? I don't mind most of their brews, but the Big Butt doppelbock just about made me puke.

If you'd read my other post you would have learned I drink the most local beer on the planet. It is made in a room 20 feet from where I am sitting. And fermented in the room I am sitting in.

homebrew my man, try it, you might like it.

Then you, my poor hung over friend, did not make good beer.

It's simple really. The secret lies in keeping the brewing area sanitary and free from stray bacteria. Other than that you really can't mess it up!

Today I decided to try some imported Japanese beer in commemoration of "The Last Samarai". I bought a six pack of Sapporo, along with the usual Rolling Rock. Wow! At first whiff, I thought it was going to be another one of those skunky beers ala Heineken, but it turned out to be one of the smoothest beers I ever had. After chugging away my half of the Sapporo, I actually had to force myself to drink the rest of the Rolling Rock.
