When refering to photos, or searching for photos, what does it mean? I'm racking my brain over this one, but when I use it I get better results.

Did you Google it? The first result says that it means pretty much what it sounds like — space to put text on the photo.

"Copy" is the material that goes into a typeset publication. "Space" is where you might put something. "Coypspace" (often used as a single word) should make lots of sense-but who learns about typesetting anymore? History is very important to understanding today...
