Blech. I am so bored being unemployed I'm perusing the macnn forums for the first time in over a year.
Apparently nobody is hiring guys with 3D Graphics (modeling & programming in C++/OpenGL) experience anymore. Maybe I should sell TVs at BestBuy.

Perhaps you need to move to a place that does need people with your talents.

Are you willing to relocate?
That the answer is yes or no; just send a cover letter summarizing your abilities and experiences to the head of the graphic department every company that would need a graphic designer; then in your letter ask to meet with that person, go and bring your resume have a chat with him or her and if they do not have any openings ask them if they forcast having one or could recommend you a company that would have an opening. Do not wait until they advertize. A company might just be talking about it and they see your letter and would love to meet with you. Go to tradeshows and talk with people in the field.
If your ex-boss is not ready to give a good reference, just ask a co-worker. Make your resume a functional one instead of chronological. Meet with the head of the department. Do not be shy go after the job; if you do not someone else will take away the job you want.

I got out of the military in 2006 and got a job with a defense contractor here in town. Lost that job a few weeks ago.
I'm probably going to end up cashing-out my 401k.

Yea, I was fired. I had just received a great annual perf. review and thought it would be a good time to ask for a significant raise.
They said, "hell no". Suddenly, I had a performance problem and was placed on some kind of improvement plan, which I completed, early.
So, not being able to justify firing me for performance issues, I was then fired for my attitude problem.

Wow. That fcking sucks. Have you progressed on getting a job yet?
I actually thought about this... what are you doing? If I got fired, I would move back in with my parents and watch re-runs for a few weeks before I got off my ass and found another job.
The one time I asked for a raise I was in the living room of my boss's house, fixing his computer. His wife had just cooked me a nice meal, so I thought it would go down well. His response was:
"Well, Calvin, how much do you want?" I told him. He said "Okay, but you are going to have to actually work." I said "never mind, then". I did get the raise, but I only found out at the end of the month when I checked my bank account. Sweet.

Have had a few recruiters call, have a few logs on the fire, but no interviews / offers yet.
My situation is a little complicated. I have a mortgage, a wife, and 3 kids.
Male prostitution may be my only option...

Interestingly enough, a few months ago I had a rather strange experience:
I was shopping at the local BestBuy, and while I was loading my purhcased goods into my car, I noticed a pasty white, middle-aged man looking me up and down from across the parking lot. We made eye contact, and he walked straight towards me.
"Oh great" thought I. Antoher homosexual has noticed that I work out.
"Hi!", he said "Would you be interested in making an extra thousand bucks a month?"
"uh, NO." I replied, my creep-DAR pegged at maximum.
"Really? I need a young guy like you to perform with my wife on video for my business"
"NO"
Hmm.. doesn't sound like such a bad deal now...
Of course, I could have ended up in a hole in that guy's basement putting the lotion on my skin...

That is a strange experience. Perform with his wife? I suppose you didn't ask him to clarify his statement

There's a local tailor who named his business "Buffalo Bill's Alterations", and yes, he's gay with longish blond hair. Funny stuff.

what program do you model in? Any rendering experience? You could look into doing architectural renderings until you can get a job that would utilize the programming aspect. Colorado still has a decent housing market and people love to see what their places will look like before they break ground.

Errr... Aren't you in Amaraca? What about suing them for that stunt?
In a German middle-sized to large company that could have never happened. The union would've shown them the bird.
Going back to the Army for another 12-24 months is not an option?

Do not worry so much, there are more jobs than you think out there.
Do what I suggested earlier in this thread and you will find a good job. Do not sit around and wait for it go and get it everywhere, send letters and resumes to head of the department to compagnies that interest you. It will work.

Exactly the same thing happen to me.
Plus I was doing 2 jobs in one and was asking for some help.
The b....y woman owner told me that I was unhappy with the company and that I should leave; no warning. She watched me pack up my stuff. She also told me that I had an attitude problem.
What she did not know is that I was seeing that one coming and I had time to update my resume and make contacts and make copies.
I sent 267 resumes within 3 weeks, got in touch with all the employment agencies, had 30 interviews and finally got a job; it was not the best job ever but it got me on the right track and now I am permanent full-time good job with a different company and got a transfer home.

Become a bartender at a gay bar. You don't need to have sex with anyone and you'll make twice as much as you ever would at a desk job. Get paid to have homosexuals notice you work out.

What am I missing here to understand that? That Amaraca's desk jobs are generally badly paid? That bartenders earn good money? Or that gay customers give large tips?
(I'm perfectly content with my job, just curious)

Interesting how fast sex comes up in any matter…
Not that I'd be the best one to follow that rule, but making good use of spare time by advancing/adding talents is a very good thing to do. Add an open and self-esteemed personality and getting a new job is a no-brainer in most cases, IMO.

I've got a list of ad agencies that are in areas I am willing to move to or in the area I am in. I have submitted my resumé, made phone calls, sent emails, etc. I created a webite to show my work and experience. Also, I keep up on all postings and apply to appropriate positions that I am qualified for. I am networking with other creative professionals. I check the headhunter sites. I am in contact with 2 headhunters.
Is that what you mean?

In certain cities, yes straight male bartenders working at gay bars make significantly more than mid-level managers and account executives. That's not to say that "desk jobs" in the U.S. are badly paid--just that gay guys like to drink and do tip big. This isn't the case in every city, but I know a few straight guys with undergraduate and even graduate degrees who still work at certain bars because the money is so good. Most of that is tax free too. The rewards can be great if you're a good looking guy and can overcome irrational fear. The downside is you're not exactly acquiring skills for future career development working at a bar(unless you want to open your own bar that is) so I don't suggest it as a long term solution.
I wasn't really suggesting it seriously at all really--since it doesn't sound the OP would be comfortable with that. I just found it funny that the OP likes to work out to look good, but doesn't like the attention he gets as a result.

Making us, straight 15% tippers, look cheap in comparison. But at least this eye-opening thread has stopped me feeling sorry for bartenders low wages anymore.
