I have a couple of big problems with Panther Internet Sharing:

1 - After enabling Internet Sharing, if I close the System Preferences and reopen sharing is stopped.
2 - I can't quite figure out how to get my other computer on the network. I tried DHCP, but the Mac OS 9 machine never obtained an IP address. So I manually configured it (When I had Jaguar installed) which worked with Jaguar but doesn't with Panther.

This sucks. So, why doesn't Internet Sharing stay running, and where does Apple have documentation about how clients should be configured?

OK, I discovered a couple of things:

1 - The Ethernet interface was configured for DHCP. I changed it to a static 192.168.2.1 address and all of a sudden I could start Internet Sharing.

2 - When I restart the Mac OS 9 machine, I have it set to use DHCP and it pauses for about 15 minutes at startup, even though it eventually gets an IP and runs fine.

So, everything is fine, but the 15 minute delay sucks. What gives with that?

OK, how about this related problem. Internet sharing seems like it should work fine-- I get assigned an IP address via DHCP-- but then I can't actually access the internet from the 2nd computer. What gives?

My setup is Linksys Wireless-B router hooked up to my DSL modem, with my PBG3 connected via PC Card WiFi card w/ open source Wireless Driver. Set to share the internet conneciton via ethernet (crossover cable from from PBG3 to PMG4). File sharing works fine. I get an IP address of 192.168.2.2; my Linksys gives out IPs in the 192.168.1.* range, so it shouldn't conflict. Anyone else have this problem or configuration? OS X.III running on both.

Well, this must be the self-healing thread. I turned off the firewall on my PowerBook, and that solved the problem.

There should be a support group for posters who have to answer their own questions.

For what it's worth, Apple does say that the firewall must be off for Internet Sharing to work, although it works fine in my setup.
