I have gcc 3.? installed and was given an error in Fink that it's a version known to cause issues, and I *have* been having trouble compiling source. So, I used Fink to install GCC4. However, the old one is still the gcc being autodetected when installing from source.
If I remove (or rename just to 'hide' it without removing) the executable file, should that be enough? In typing this, I realize I shoul dsee if Fink has a method of properly removing software it sees installed, but I'm not too sure. I don't want to screw up ver 4.

What does gcc_select tell you?
Code:
ssku-c-223-202:~ root# gcc_select Current default compiler: gcc version 4.0.0 20041026 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 4061)
I'm running Mac OS X 10.4, so it may be different, because 10.3 does not include gcc4, and I'm not sure if gcc_select can see fink's 4.0... Anyways, try running that command to see what the default compiler is, and possibly to switch to 4.0 (sudo gcc_select 4.0).

It gave me this:
gcc version 3.3 20030304 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 1666)

I installed gcc4 successfully, and want that to be my default gcc now

That's probably what fink is complaining about. Try selecting 4.0 with: sudo gcc_select 4.0
