I'll shortly be ordering a couple of upgrades for MS Office 2004. We've not used it here for a while and the last ones we bought were Office 2001 for OS9. I intend to format the Macs and do a complete re-install of the system etc, and my question is, do I need to bother installing Office 2001 into Classic, just so that I can install the upgrades into OS X, or does the Office 2004 upgrade installer just ask for your previous serial number?

I hope this isn't a dumb question and would appreciate any help. I have searched to no avail for the answer.

In June I bought Office 2004 as an upgrade to Office 2001. At the same I bought a new eMac and installed the upgrade directly into OS X without the Office 2001 installed. It worked great - no problems.

(Since then I have installed Office 2001 on Classic for cross-platform/version testing.)
Ignore the argumentative nature of this poster. He is old and can't engage in meaningful dialog
very long. Therefore, management asks that you at least humor him. Thanks.

Cool. So do I use my original 2001 serial number or do you get a new one with the 2004 upgrade?

Office 2004 will come with it's own serial number. If you do the drag and drop install, it will prompt you for the s/n when you launch one of the Office apps for the first time.
