Right now I only have a little 40W practice amp and I was thinking of getting my first second amp.

Any recommendations? Anything I should stay away from?

I'm not very good but I try to play blues and metal and would like something versatile.

I don't know too much about amps, but I have a friend who is a hobby player with a 100w Peavey Backstage that he likes. Kevin or Doofy would probably be able to give you a much better answer though.
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

I don't understand the question - on many levels:

What's the amp for? Guitar? Bass?

Are you strictly a bedroom player or are you looking to hook up with a band?

How much cash do you want to spend?

Is this an amp to last you or just something to tide you over until you get better and get a third amp?

What make/model of instrument do you have?

Who are your favourite musicians on the same instrument?

I think we can probably fix you up if we know the answers to these questions.

Guitar

Too early to tell. I guess I would like to be in a band if I ever get good enough but it's not a goal.

Less than $300 (that could changeā€¦)

I'm a pretty practical guy, I would prefer that it be something that will last me but I dunno if my price range will allow that.

It's a cheapo Epiphone strat for now. I may be looking at getting something different though. Maybe a telecaster.

OK.

Perhaps try a Roland Cube 30x.

It's not going to set the World on fire with its tone, but it's versatile, built like a tank and within your budget. Unfortunately, with guitar amps, tone is big money.

These Rolands aren't bad for the price (Google tells me about $230). They're prolly just about loud enough for a band rehearsal night and have a little switch on them which lets you knock the volume down considerably for those late night practice sessions in the house.

I've got two of the Cube 20x jobbies (the 30x has more sounds). Use them all the time for all sorts of stuff.

In your price range? A Fender Blues Junior. Or possibly a Pro Junior. I like the sound of the Blues Junior better, though...

All glory to the hypnotoad.
