My wife has been baking and decorating cakes for a while now, and she's gotten to the point of needing to have an online presence for details about what she does. As we kick around "name" ideas, I keep wanting to use the possessive of her name, which is Karen, so it would be something like "Karen's [whatever]".

BUT, translating that into a URL (knowing full well the URL doesn't have to match the name exactly), means it would be something like "www.karenswhataver".

Being the nitpicker I am, I hate the idea of using the possessive in the URL while being able to add the apostrophe. Am I overreacting?

What say you?

*CRAP, I typed "tink" instead of "think." I don't se how to fix it, either... :/
I fixed it. You can't-it's a Mod thing. Glenn

We're looking into that, but "cakes by karen" and things quite similar are being used all over the country. :/

Personally, I don't think "karenswhatever.com" would be totally awful, unless her potential clients tried to use the apostrophe in the URL (some people are just so stupid).

she could always do "whateverbykaren.com"

I don't think it's wrong to leave the apostrophe out of the URL as long as it's there on the page in text and/pix. Plenty of other punctuation gets left out of URLs too that is meant to be there. URLs are not grammar.

It IS just a URL. Are there any apostrophes in those "spell things out" phone numbers? Nope. Same thing.

Heh, yep. I think I'm just too much of a grammar stickler and it bugs me.

She's still thinking about a name, though — but all the ones I thought of are in use in other States (which is fine and means we could use it in our area/county without probs).

And if the Domain is not available, then your wife can always change her name

It's a URL - as long as it's readable use it and Fogettaboutit.

karenskakes?

Yeah, it's spelled wrong, but at least it has vowels in it. Sometimes you have to get creative with web site names.

More proof that whoever invented the domain name system was a complete tool.

www.cakeykaren.com

"Cakey" is also a local verb synonymous with "awesome".

Because people who're not complete tools would have maybe figured that there's going to be more than one "Dave Smith" on the Internet. Or more than one Karen who makes cakes. Or more than one "Daffyd Jones" in Wales. ...And then designed a system with that in mind. I'm sure I could do it if someone gave me enough money to stop me from looking at boobies for long enough to engage the old grey matter.

It is not the domain naming system, but how it's used. The incredibly intelligent folks that came up with it never envisioned commercial use the way the net has evolved into. Maybe they should have-considering how long we've been getting phone numbers that "spell out" various names... But I wouldn't say they were complete tools. Just lacking in foresight.

karencanhascakez.com?

Or something funky with the domain like www.karenscak.es or www.cak.es/bykaren

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Hyphens suck.

Karen's Confections? The missing apostrophe in the URL bugs me too but the title of the site and everything else on the site will be correct.

Well, she's still undecided.

She wants to use "Bluebird Cakery," but there's already a "Bluebird Bakery" — it's in a different State, but I still think it's too close.

I told her to use "Karen's Little Cakery" or "Karen's Little Cake Shop" — but she isn't sold on those. I also told her I'd bring her under my RAILhead organization and we can call it "The RAILhead Cake Factory," but she's not buying it. Not cute enough, or somehting.

I actually like the idea of going opposite to cutesy cake names with railhead cake factory. If she's going to be looking for business via google, having a unique name might be good, even if the other shop is states away. Heck, people ship cakes.

Also, Bluebird Cakes sound like Blackbird cakes which reminds me of ol' King Cole, so.... are there birds being baked in these cakes!?!?!

That's a pretty amazing cake. How much does she charge for something like that?

My wife tried making some extra cash by selling cakes on the side and it was a nightmare. The main problem being that my wife is a much better cook then an artist. She wanted to make delicious cakes made scratch with all natural ingredients and everyone who ordered one wanted some super intricate decoration scheme.

"Okay, so it's Elmo, but he needs to be riding Thomas the Tank engine and battling a Bionicle. Also, we need some Fraggles on there and half a dozen ninjas."

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Thanks!

She charges based on cost of ingredients and servings, then doubles or triples that to cover time, etc. That's pretty much the industry standard. This was a $122 cake, not counting time.

That is a tehawesomecake.com.

Can she make my cake if/when I ever get married? (I actually met Duff Goldman of Ace of Cakes fame a couple of times, since we have the same alma mater, and friends of friends know him, too, but of course now he’s much too famous for me to afford.)

I'll see if she'll approve that name.

It would rule to make your cake — but I don't know how well it'd travel to you!

Duff told me that they flew a cake to London once (from Baltimore), which meant flying staff with it, for final on-site assembly!

Alas, I don’t think that’d be the best use of my limited financial resources!

Also, it would help to have a fiancé first.
