Hi,

I'm usually browsing on the powerbook forum, but I think I need your opinions...

I may have the chance of getting the computer that I have always wanted. I haven't been studying too much about the costs of these things, but i have to imagine this to be a good deal.

A friend of mine (who has a bit of money I guess) is willing to sell his dual 2.0 1gb g5 for $900. He's going for the top of the line g5. Is that good? My single g5 1.8 has been extremely good to me, but I think this would be a pretty nice upgrade. I have 2.5gb memory in my 1.8, would that be usable in the dual 2.0? Do you think I will be able to get most of my money back from selling my single 1.8?

Let me know of any things I should look for and if this is a worthy upgrade. Thanks!!

Well, $900 is an amazing price for that machine; if that offer were made to me, I'd buy it without batting an eye.

That's a very good deal! Most g5s selling on ebay are $1500+ and they're not even near close of auction yet!

Not so much performance, per se, for most tasks. But it'll stay MUCH more responsive under load.

Hi,

Will my memory chips be usable in the 2.0?

Do I have to worry about cooling or any other issues with this model?

Thank you!

I think so, both are PC3200.

You can read a test about the maiden G5 here, Dual 2.0 GHz is way better than single 1.8 GHz there.

One though… what model/year is that G5 Dual 2.0 GHz ?, sounds silly but would be better it was older than newer, the older one has PCI-X and eight RAM slots, the newer one has PCI and 'only' four RAM slots.

Good deal, get it...

I think all G5 PM revs up untill now use PC3200, as stated above, so the RAM shouldn't be a problem.

Great price!!
The RAM should work as I assume you didn't get cheap no-name RAM which is limited to slower speeds. But get it if you can. I think you'll make money by selling your single 1.8 GHz on ebay or break even!!

$900. For a DP 2.0. That made me do a double take. Hook me up, kmarketing - I'll be your best friend.

Hi,

Thanks to everyone, I think i will be making this happen.

This is eventually what I will have (taking some parts from my single 1.8) and hopefully still make some or break even with the price of the 2.0:

Dual 2.0
3gb Memory (1gb originally)
2 160gb Hard Drives (1 from the 1.8)
Radeon 9600 (I think that's what it is) 128mb Video Memory
Airport Extreme (from the 1.8)

It looks like this one is the older one with 8 slots. That's the good one right?

How do I know if it has the pci-x slot?

I thought the g5 1.8 was a good enough machine, I can only imagine that this will be better and more future proof!!

Thanks everyone!!

If it has 8 RAM slots it is the PCI-X model, I guess you can check that inside the Apple System Profiler.

I would leave your old machine complete so it doesn't miss things like memory or harddrive. I'm pretty sure, you'd make more money this way, getting the additional parts you need later than the other way around!

Hi,

The original 1.8 still has 512mb memory and an 80gb Hard Drive. That should be okay, no?

Yeah. Maybe you can include some extra memory if the price is higher $900 + x on ebay

But as long as it is complete, I think that's the way to go

Hi,

If I can get $900 for the 1.8 and have the dual 2.0 the way that it is listed with the 3gb memory etc., I will be pretty happy.

Any issues of the dual 2.0 that i should look out for?

Thanks!

Sounds like a slick deal, a great deal actually. Go for it.

Once you use dual processors you will be spoiled. Single CPU computers (be it PC, Mac or Linux)
I've found just aren't responsive under load and I notice it now more than ever.

Hi,

I got the g5 yesterday, I am so happy that I did. I have a buyer lined up for my single 1.8 for $1000. He is supposed to pick it up this weekend.

So here it is like I imagined:
g5 dual 2.0
3gb Memory
2x 160gb Hard Drives
128 mb Video Memory
Airport Extreme

Total - $900.

I'm actually making $100 with the sale of my single 1.8, so my total is $800.

That is incredible in my mind. I'm so happy I decided to upgrade, and made money in doing so. I've done that with my powerbooks, but I can't believe I got that done with my g5.

I will probably have to start another post, but does anyone know of any issues that I have to be aware of with the older dual 2.0?

Thanks!!

None I've heard of except for the common G5 chirping and beeping.

And the chirping and beeping isn't necessarily present in all machines.
