I just saw a jet land in the Hudson.

It looked pretty smooth, but obviously not normal.

I hope so too. I can't be believe how good the landing was, smooth as glass. I suspect no one was killed. Let's hope.

Oh, wow...

If you guys believe in it, definitely be praying for these people. I know all of our thoughts are going to be with them until this situation is over with.

This does nothing to help my fear of flying.

Initially, I had neglected to consider that this isn't the best time of year to be in water.

They're talking to some guy right now who was on the plane. He said the pilot simply said, "Prepare for impact," and landed it nicely.

Have they said how many people have been rescued?

Wow.

They're saying it may have been a bird?

if that's true, and it was beyond this pilot's control but he kept everyone's lives safe...he deserves a massive bonus.

It just sank, you can barely see the tail sticking up out of the water now.

They are saying everyone is out, without major injuries, thankfully. Everyone needs to shake the hand of the pilots and other crew members.

I'm only 2 aves away, but I cant bring myself to go over there.

No, it hasn't sunk. It is being moved by tug boats at this very moment. The tail, left wing and about half of the fuselage is above water.

I think the video I'm watching has a bad vantage point. But Wolf just said it is sinking more and more. Probably won't make it to the shore.

I think I heard the water was 43, but the air is 20. Nonetheless, not good.

Great job, and incredible control considering the wind.

Anyway, amazing job by the pilot/flight crew!

So the next time the stewardess talks about using your seat cushion as a floatation device in case of a water landing, I may actually pay attention instead of making fun of her saying, "yeah, like that will ever happen."

Great job by the pilot. Great job by the A320 not breaking up. Thankfully they ditched in a busy ferry area. Remarkable.

So all the passengers on that fight are OK then? I hope so, that would be so traumatizing. I don't think I could fly again after something like this.

I dunno. You kinda gotta figure that the odds of being in a second 'crash' landing are pretty damned low.

Except that the odds of the plane you're on needing a "crash" landing are still the same, every time.

I guess so. But if it was me, I think I'd give up air travel if I was in a crash.

Although I was involved in an incident, didn't realize until we landed and saw the fleet of ambulances and fire-engines following our plane down the runway.

The second ditching took place on 4 October 2004; this time Ray was between Hawaii and Christmas Island in a Cessna 182 on another US-Australia ferry flight when it developed engine trouble. Why? For doing his job?

Do you have any reason to think another pilot wouldn't have done as good a job under the same circumstances? Pilots are well trained for all these situations, so they'll all do pretty much the same thing in a given situation.

The guy's resumé and many years of experience are probably what caused this to go as smoothly as possible.

I am quite sure that there is a considerable number of pilots flying all over the country whose attempt to produce the same result would've ended in tragedy.

It's not like what this guy did was easy, you know.

No doubt. An inexperienced pilot may not have handled the cross winds as well, or when splashing down may not have been able to handle the drag from the engines, etc, etc. This was a great pilot.
