I am making the transition to DVD, after seeing DVD players for sub $200 Canadian (actualy $100 Candian, but they were too bare bones. No DVD-R support).

So how many DVD's do people have in there collections, and which DVD's are they? Also how often do you buy DVD's?

I was suppsed to get a DVD player for X-mas, but after my VCR started having dinner on Saturday night, I panic'd and got a DVD player on Sunday since I do use my VCR alot.

I got my first 2 DVD's May 2001 since my mom has the iMac DV SE 99.

Here are my DVD's
  • Th Net (DVD Video)
  • The Matrix
  • AntiTrust
  • Hackers
  • The Matrix Revisisted
  • Meet the Parents
  • Jerry Maguire
  • Speed 5 Star Edition Box Set
  • Sneakers

I also plan to ask for Back to the Future The Complete Trilogy DVD Box set, and Music of the heart Collectors Edition for X-mas., with a few others.

I got my first DVD player back when a decent one still costed upwards of $250. Mine was $160 at the time: An Oritron brand player. You can just imagine the quality

I only buy DVDs I really like, but even then I find that I don't watch them that often. I keep them around more so I can share them with others--If a friend of mine hasn't seen one of my movies, I always try to find an opportunity to show it.
  • Fight Club
  • The Simpsons Seasons 1 and 2
  • Amelie
  • Office Space
  • Princess Mononoke
  • My Neighbor Totoro (got it off eBay; I think it's pirated)
  • Grave of Fireflies and Kiki's Delivery Service (I'm pretty sure this one is pirated, too)
  • Spirited Away
  • Pi
  • 2 ACO music video DVDs
  • SMAP Short Films

I'm on the Spun.com waiting list for the following used DVDs:
  • Smashing Pumpkins Greatest Hits
  • MST3K the Movie
  • Wayne's World 1 & 2
  • Snatch
  • Life is Beautiful
  • Army of Darkness

It was some time during the summer. Late July? Early August?

I'm signed up to be notified when Amazon.com has the third season available for preorder

As I read others' DVD counts, it saddens me to realize that I only have 67 DVDs, and my player just turned 4 1/2 a few days ago. Luckily though, I started working at Columbia House, and I can score returns for $7! I see my collection growing rapidly...

My fave spins...

Air Force One (My first disc...I had it three days before the player)

Fight Club

Mallrats (Best...Commentary...Ever)

Austin Powers

South Park

Enjoy your new player...they're fun.

- Star Trek: First Contact

- Misery
- Austin Powers
- Austin Powers 2
- The Shawshank Redemption*

*No, it doesn't have any special features, but it's a great way to watch a top-notch film.

67 DVD's? That's alot. I plan on having 35 by then end of next year.

I look for Geek Movies (have all 6), Movies that make you think aobut life, or movies that touch the heart, or that are really good.

I will be probably getting an average of 10 DVD's/year, and never renting since I have Movie Central. Unedited Uncut commercial free movies on 6 themed movie channels.

I can watch the movies on Movie Central within 10-12 months of there theatrical relase.

AnttiTrust is a top notch DVD, and of course The Matrix/Revisited.

Got over 400 at last count. Too many to list. Just about every new release that comes out in action, comedy. A few dramas. No horror and few Sci-fi. Seasons 1 & 2 of Simpsons, Seasons 1 - 8 of Friends, Seasons 1 - 3 of Sex in the City, Seasons 1 - 3 of Sopranos, Volumes 1 - 14 of South Park, complete Black Adder and Absolutely Fabulous. Lots of Monty Python.... the list goes on.

You'd have that many too if you lived in a non-English speaking country that has re-runs of 70's tele-movies on cable and charges you USD$50 per month for the privilege!!!

I've got about 80 DVD's (o.k. it's really about 90 if I count the porn). I've been collecting almost 5 years now. I only purchase movies I really like. I usually don't buy immidiatly when the disc are realeased. If you wait a few month you can usually save a few bucks. I haven't been watching them to much lately. I've got 5 or 6 that I haven't even removed the shrink wrap from.

I have a few favorites (My Cousin Vinny, some Pink Panthers, The Jerk), some TV collections (MASH seasons 1 & 2, Simpsons season 1), and the rest is wrestling (most of the ECW DVDs... man, I miss ECW!).
I just have to pick up Simpsons season 2 one of these days...

My collection is at around 40 or so. The most frequently watched:

- All currently available Doctor Who titles
- All currently available MST3K (sole exception: Hellcats)
- The Big Lebowski
- The Legend of Drunken Master
- Iron Monkey
- Galaxy Quest (Tony Shalhoub rules)

I'm waiting 'til next month to buy the Lord of the Rings. Gotta have that extended version.

Why should you buy DVD's when you can rent them ? IMO it's a waste of money buying them, you only see them once in a long time.

actually, there are people like Juan who do get their moneys worth out of DVD's. He watches them, and watches them... I don't get it, but both the guys in my apt love to re-watch movies. As for me, I own 1 DVD, Juan gave it to me. And I can't recall the title right now, which tells you how excited I am about movies. It's the car movie, w/ the blond guy, and the green cars and the street racing.

Depends what you're into. Most of mine are movies that I had to order online or buy from a specialty retailer to see them at all. Movies like Junk or Versus don't show up at the rental places I know about.

unless you have kid, then owning monsters, inc. is cheaper than continually renting it.
also, buying the dvd may be less expensive than seeing it in a movie theater.
