Here are my interests:

NO RAP
but there are exception like British Rap from The Streets. I like that. And a couple of eminem songs are funny too.

My fave bands:

- Metallica (they're just a classic..... lyrics are excellent, rhythm is excellent)
- Daft Punk
- Ladytron (funny lyrics, beats are so nice too)
- The Strokes (I like the weird guitar in 12:51 and some other songs... I like most of their tunes)
- The Dandy Warhols (feels a bit like country in some tunes.. i LOVE THEM)
- Manu Chao........ again it's perfect music I like ALL their tunes.
- The Offspring... good music
- Air.... I don't love all their songs but heck, the are some pretty perfect ones...
- Heart (I,m a Heart newbie but it's very good pop rock)
- Jean Leloup (good altern from qubec)

no hardcore trance.... but I do like "Punk" from Ferry Corsten

that's pretty much it.... i think I might have forgotten some bands but overall that's it.

so do you guys have any suggestions?

if not, we could just talk about these bands.... what songs do you like the most?!

Why not listen to some Christian music? Check out http://www.air1.com for good music that matches some of your current tastes.

Don't quite know if you'll dig them, but two bands that I try to get everyone to listen to are:

Ozomatli - Great band from LA, a true mix of cultures and musical influences. Despite being one of the tightest bands ever, when they utilize hip-hop it's actually good. Definitely try to get into some of this.

&

Gomez - My favorite. Band. Ever. As far as I'm concerned, they're recording the best music that's out there now (totally debatable, I know ). Check them out.

Hope you get some good suggestions fromt the rest of the board.

I'd recommend Pink Floyd (the 70's stuff for now), Led Zep and ColdPlay.
Well, that's what I tend to listen to most that kinda resembles your tastes.

Oh yeah, and Val Doonican. Ahem.
Just who are Britain? What do they? Who is them? And why?

I was just about to recommend Gomez too, then I saw your post. 'Bring It On' and 'In Our Gun' are two of my favorite albums.

FYI: If you want to see them live, they are playing in Austin, TX this Septmeber 17-19. Check it out: http://www.aclfestival.com/

Thanks wax, but living in Maine kinda puts the kebosh on that. Thankfully, I've already got my tix to see them when they come up here in the middle of August. If you've never seen them live before, you're in for a treat. This will be my third show.

I'm still debating whether to buy a plane ticket and go. Anyway, check out the band Galactic if you haven't heard of them. They are another one of my favorites.

Check out Godspeed You! Black Emperor's latest, Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven.

Fecking unbelievable.

Also, not sure how you feel about NOFX, but their latest, The War on Errorism, is also amazing.

When you get older, I see Steely Dan in your future.

Until then:

Metallica => Queensryche
Daft Punk => Future Sound of London
Ladytron => THERE IS NO LADYTRON EQUIV. THEY ROCK.
The Strokes => The White Stripes

TRY:

Jimi Hendrix
Santana
Future Sound of London
Loop Guru
The Ramones
old Van Halen
Godsmack
Incubus (Make Yourself)
Led Zeppelin
Eve6 = like 1 album?
Albums: King Crimson's "Discipline" , Yes' "The Yes Album" , Billy Joel "The Stranger"

I shouldn't even have to say it: Smashing Pumpkins. (Start with Siamese Dream if you don't have any albums)
Do you want forgiveness or respect?

Another vote for Joe Satriani. 'Sides, I think he's a Mac user.

Skinny Puppy. Industrial/Industrial Dance. Contemporary with Ministry (another great band). It's not for everyone, to be sure.
Album: Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse. Song: God's Gift (Maggot)
Album: VIVIsectVI. Song: Testure.
Album: Rabies. Song: Worlock.

Miles Davis. Jazz/Blues. Godlike improv. Cannot beat Miles.
Albums: Kind of Blue, Bags Groove.
Both are awesome.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

If you like Offspring, you might like NOFX.
If you like Air, you might like Stereolab.
It looks like you like soft/pop rock, check out Wilco.

And because you're just a teensy bit open minded about rap, you might consider checking out the self-titled album by Dr. Octagon. (Kool Keith/Dan the Automator/Kid Koala project). It's rap, but the beats are really nice and the lyrics are creative...its a hard album not to like.

Because nobody knows anything...

Like Metallica but tighter.

Oh, and this band got back together and is better than ever.

And if you're too lazy to click on my links and find out which two bands I meant, they're Living Colour and Anthrax.

I'd say so.

By the way, Vivid was rereleased in 2002 with additional tracks tracks. In my opinion, the cover of The Clash's Should I Stay or Should I Go is better than the original. It's worth a repurchase (or at least buying the new tracks from your legal music download store of your choice).

Another suggestion - can't believe I forgot this one - for Metallica fans: Megadeth. All of its albums released through Capitol Records are going to be re-released in remastered and remixed form next week. I especially suggest Rust in Peace. (Best thrash album. Ever.)

But avoid anything from Megadeth released after Cryptic Writings.

I'm a huge Offspring fan, so if you enjoy them, i'll recommend, NOFX.

But right now, i'm into alot of Jeff Buckley, so ye, if you like a brilliant voice, with real symbolism you might wanna try that out too.

For heavy stuff, check out Dillinger Escape Plans' "Irony is a dead scene" (Featuring Mike Patton of Faith No More). They are super heavy yet super technical musicians. You cannot bob your head to their music.
For light stuff, I like anything by Bright Eyes.

Buckley kinda scares me... I always imagine him sitting in his recording studio, ready to explode, for some reason.

Anyway, my suggestions would be...

They Might Be Giants
Radiohead
The White Stripes

TMBG are extraordinarily quirky, but that's what makes them my favorite band. I don't particularly like Radiohead, but I know a lot of people do, so yeah. And a number of people think the Stripes are blah, but I have to say that Jack White is one fine song writer. Oh, and check out some Led Zeppelin when you get a chance.

metal and other stuff.

mastodon - really sort of establishing their own hardcore/metal/rock genre. amazing stuff. their last album "remission" is amazing. their new album "leviathan" drops this august. im ****ing stoked. super heavy, but not just sludged in with crappy chug crap.

necrophagist - death metal with a seriously technical edge. tight as ****.

jawbreaker - i dont see enough people around here recommending that band. heartfelt punk songs. songs about girls. songs about cities and stuff. good lyrics. great music. pretty much any of their albums are good. "24 hour revenge therapy" is probably their best stuff. i like "bivouac" quite a bit. "dear you" was their final album, and rather enjoyable.

that recommendation for the flaming lips earlier, id say to give them a try as well. sounds like it might toot your horn.

Agreed. Especially appropriate since you're in Montreal (talking to the original poster here).

In a similar vein, you might want to check out other nice Montreal bands like Hangedup, A Silver Mt. Zion and Fly Pan Am (playing at the Cabaret on the 29th, by the way). Do Make Say Think is great too (from Toronto), as is Mogwai (they're playing in August at the Spectrum, great show if it's anything like last year).

Definitely watch for Godspeed live appearances. Definitely the best shows I've ever been to.

I saw They Might Be Giants already up there but I'll put in for them again! If you are in or near Montreal checkout a local Ska band, "The King Pins", they have a great sound in French of English. Uhm - Modest Mouse is great too but make sure you listen to the original stuff not just what is getting airplay nowadays. Hawksley Workman is great.. Ermm... Ohya, The Slackers too.. another good ska band.

Enjoy.

PS: If you like the Strokes then checkout the Trues.. Trews.. Trues.. something like that - they are from out east and cousins of this girl I used to work with.. apparently a really good band but I never heard them play.
Yose.

Excellent roll call, gentlemen. These are the best kinds of threads, barring any pissing contest.

Rocket from the Crypt -- man, these guys are such a blast live, and San Diegans to boot. And the Replacements, these guys as an ensemble were so damned talented it hurts; Westerberg soloing proves it.
