Mac Mini doesn't support 5.1 output?

I'm having a major issue with my new Intel Mac Mini. I'm using it as a DVD player, and have purchased the right cables and adapters to connect it to my home theatre receiver via Toslink Optical. iTunes plays fine. However, I cannot get my Mini to send the right audio stream out to the amplifier: it comes out as stereo. All five speakers play, but not as discrete channels. I fiddled around in Audio Midi setup, but no help there, as when I selected Encoded Digital, it doesn't want to play at all.
Any ideas? Or have I just wasted a pile of cash buying a Mac Mini to stand in as an HTPC when it can't even do 5.1 audio out?

Did you tell the mini to output through optical rather than stereo? System Prefs:Sound:Output, and fiddle around in there

There's nothing to fiddle with. It just says digital out and there's no options to change anything . . . not even volume level. There's a lot to fiddle with in Audio Midi setup, but I just screwed things up when I did that. This is an annoyance . . .

I'm interested in hearing how this is resolved. Can someone please definitely say that they are getting 5.1 from their DVDs from the Mini?

Well you should be able to get 5.1 from DVDs when it is working correctly. And you use a Toslink cable.

Resolved in DVD Players preferences. The original menu was greyed out because I was playing the DVD; had to stop the DVD to change audio output settings. All fine and dandy now.
