I've been thinking Lion was around the corner for a while. I imagine Lion will be the next one and then they'll move onto something else for later.

I can't wait to have the Yog-Sothoth version in my Mac!

Why not call it 'Ounce'? Especially, if it will be drastically changed from Leopard's dark colors to something light. Who knows what is in Apple's sleeve?

"Ours go all the way to 11..." I'm waiting for version 11 because of Callahan's saloon; a computer running if was brandished by a time-traveler in one of Spider Robinson's stories.

When I first read about this thread, I immediately thought of Ocelot, Cougar, and Lion. In some order, that could cover 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8, no? More generically, wildcat strikes me better than bobcat, even though the latter is a specific type. Some of the other types, such as snow leopard, might have names less similar to Leopard in some other language(s).

I also thought of Sabertooth. Smilodon (which I did not think of) is interesting. It was interesting to find out that they are not actually tigers, but they are extinct, which might not exactly be a selling point. Scary, though. While one wants the name to connote strength, intimidation is rather less ideal.

How long do we expect this to go on, anyway? It don't expect to be still using this in twenty more years, or even ten. At least, I hope not! Will there be even one more?

Suppose at some point in the future, Apple gets *really* serious about ease of use. I know the readership thinks MacOS is already, but that's a relative thing. Supporting my parents using Macs for e-mail makes it clear just how much of a learning curve even a Mac has. So, a voice-operated or even conversational replacement for the Finder that doesn't require me as an elf to secretly program in all the responses (which is hard since I live in Massachusetts and they live in Florida) seems a necessary precursor, but there are lots of other things this would need.

A truly user-friendly OS might make the shift to felis domesticus (species Felis silvestris catus). There are many breeds to name releases after, even if you restrict yourself to short-haired varieties.

I vote for Serval. Servals are smaller cats that look like cheetahs but have amazing features. Like being able to jump 11-12ft up in the air from a stand still. (They do this to catch birds). I think Serval is a fitting name for an OS, especially one built off of SERVER technologies.

"Ode to Spot" by Lieutenant Commander Data

Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature.
Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.
I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
A singular development of cat communications
That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.
A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents.
You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,
It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.
Oh Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display
Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array,
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

Hi all, I too believe they should move on from the Big-Cat names. They should forget about Lion this is no king of the jungle! I would have wished for Tiger at for 10.5 or 10.6 but I digress.
I believe they should use Planet names & moons, (Jupiter, Saturn, Mars) although there is one planet's name you'll want to avoid!! Still this leaves 7# = 14y's, also they can use Snake names if they want to keep to the animal-kingdom (King Cobra, Rattle-snake, Boas) The planets are good for where they are taking the OS-X app's such has Time-machine.

I think they should skip 10.6 and go right to 11. What? Why not just make 10.6 more powerful? Well..... because this OS is version 11!

Seriously though... Cougar is the winner. Since Cougar is a term for a hot, middle aged woman (at least in my part of the country), that may just fit. Beautiful, experienced, mature, potentially ferocious... yeah, it's starting to have a nice ring to it!

Ok, all kidding aside, Cougar is the only one that sounds cool and is instantly recognizeable.

Check this, you'll have no doubts that it will be 10.6 Lion and 10.7 Lynx.

Where OS X 'Big Cat' code names REALLY come from - The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)

10.8 (11?) will just be some hypermodern multi touch based system that has nothing to do with big cats.

How about:
10.6 Beelzebub
10.7 Abaddon
10.8 Antichrist
10.9 Lucifer
11.0 Prince of Darkness

In other words, how about some good ol Microsoft themes. I would love to see Jobs introduce
OS X 10.8 Antichrist. That would be something to see.

After the cats have all left us behind, (so technically, Lion should be the next OS), the next OS name should be Dragon.

It is definitely either Cougar or Lynx, as Apple has a Trademark on both of those names. I suspect Cougar next, and if there is a 10.7, Lynx.

Just because not as many people know Lynx is a cat, but most know what a cougar is.

Going with the cat theme, I'm surprised Apple didn't already get away from cats with Leopard, as Tiger is the biggest cat and everything else is a step-down, unless it's prehistoric or mythic. Of course that's assuming Apple was working from smallest to largest. Also Cougar is cool, but Cougar = Puma. So going backwards doesn't seem like a good idea. That said, they already did that once with Puma>Jaguar>Panther, and Panther = Puma = Cougar. So IDK.
Of course maybe Apple will could use canines - Fox, Wolf, Coyote. I can see the headlines now Apple goes to the dogs.

I think Apple likes to use names with two syllables in.
