I am trying to figure out how to Castle on the Queen side. I have done it on the King side with the Rook, but when I have all open space between the King and Rook on the Queen side and move the King over 2 spaces it will not castle. The game will not allow this move.

What am I doing wrong? Any help is appreciated.

Nothing actually. I noticed that along with a few other "illegal moves" that I made that were pefectly legal.

So OS X Chess is not a functional match then? I am surprised that it is not a legit game as I thought it had been around for awhile. I thought that it was a game from NEXTstep OS.

Any Chess games that work correctly that you would recommend?

Thanks.

chess for OSX is so booty.
castling doesn't work. undo doesn't work. speech commands work if you say them wicked fast or for me i have to say them in a high pitched voice.
all it all it equals a rotten game of chess

Apple will release a Software Update for Chess! Haha! It's almost as funyn as including iTunes in the Software Update list.

Castling Queenside works perfectly for me, just by moving the King over 2 squares.

Can someone give a *specific* sequence of moves starting from the opening, where a legal move is not allowed?

you cannot castle "thru check" or if the queen's rook or the king have already moved. by throu check i mean if either of the sqares that the king has to move thru is can be attacked by an enemy piece than the move is illegal.

as far as chess games go, chessmaster is good, playing on yahoo is fun too. or go to versiontracker.com and type in chess.

Somehow I have the feeling that Apple is not spending a lot of time worrying about the chess game, given the other problems in X...

Just wanted to sound off about what a poor excuse for a chess game that garbage is! OS X for chess is a joke! You cannot rotate the board, undo button malfunctions, you cannot get a read out of the moves, no clock etc, etc, etc.

I'm insulted Apple included that garbage with my computer! I've been wanting to delete it except that it's not bad if you just play as white. How can we petition Apple to fix this game or is it a lost cause? I mean, playing chess on the Newton was better than this!

BTW the chess engine itself is strong though. Just the interface sucks and so do the options!

Hmm, well it would be good if someone who knew how would do that. It would be an improvement for a start if it would just remember the window position.

But yes, there are ample other problems with it.. it's very easy to make it beachball just by undoing a move when it's not your turn. I've never bothered to play a whole game on it.. there was a time when I would have but it doesn't have the option for human vs. human either.

In any case, I never met a computer chess game that I could beat at any level, and have only seen it done once, so it may be for the best that I haven't played it .

I never play it. I prefer to play with the living using Fixation and sometimes ChessWorks. Both are top notch. If I wish to play the computer MacChess in classic is sweet. Most definitely the best chess game (other than sigma) on the mac.

Yeah, it's tough. I can usually beat the lower levels of other chess games, but I have never beaten OS X Chess without a lot of undo.

BTW, the 2D version (which is really the only playable version - the 3D makes it too dificult to see paths) is really ugly and looks just like Sargon on my Commodore 64!

While that sigma chess looks interesting, I'm getting an error when I try expanding it. I downloaded it from here: http://www.sigmachess.com/_download/download.html

Could someone else try and see if it works? Thanks.
