How do you guys like the new Safari?
Not sure whether I like the cluttered title, but it saves a few pixels. Cover flow view doesn't seem very helpful either, but I'll give it some more time to grow on me.

Hmm, it's more bloated in my opinion.

I did not see this coming at all though....well done Apple!

And it passes Acid 3.

They have a list with the "150 features in Safari 4".
http://www.apple.com/safari/features.html

Looks like a lot of eye candy to me.

Though the offline database feature looks very promising for the future. Read cross-platform web apps that work on all kinds of cell phones, PDAs, etc.

Wow, nothing exploded. Carry on …

Edit:
Seems snappier™ to me. Is it just my imagination or did they improve scrolling and such?

Can you install it side-by-side with 3.2, or does it replace it?

It replaced my Safari application in my Applications folder. The dmg has an uninstall though.

I like the new Safari. The Top Sites feature is very cool.

seems to replace it (altho it must be tucked away somewhere; there's an uninstall option with the download, which should put previous safari back...that's my theory anyway...

i HATE coverflow, in the finder, and now in safari. otherwise, so far, the tabs are throwing me off a little (i keep wanting to click below the address bar); seems fast, stable (again, so far...)

From what I can tell it replaces it. But you can re-install 3.2.1.

Anyone figure out how to turn of the History display when typing a URL? Or how to clear the Google searches?

It's strange. Although I think Cover Flow looks nice, I cannot seem to find any use for it. To me it serves simply no purpose in the Finder, the iPhone (iPod) or in Safari 4.

Actually I'm gonna say cover flow in Safari makes more sense than iTunes or the Finder. See there's lots of times I wanna find a web page I was viewing but the header for the site is pretty standard like "Super awesome site about something" so my history looks like

Super awesome site about something
Super awesome site about something
Super awesome site about something
Super awesome site about something
MacNN
Super awesome site about something
Super awesome site about something
Super awesome site about something
Slashdot.org news for nerds
Super awesome site about something
Super awesome site about something

So which of those Super awesome site about something do I want to view? Well they're actually all different pages and I certainly don't remember the URL but they all looked different.

Thus I think cover flow is a good idea for once.

As for the windows version I gotta say Safari feels a lot better on WIndows now, though I can't see where exactly I get cover flow or the top sites features working... kinda wonder if those are gonna be Mac only or something. It looks much better as a windows App, though to be honest it's pretty much a clone of Google's Chrome.

I'm loving it so far. They took everything I was waiting for Google Chrome to bring to the Mac and beat Google to the punch. Now if only I could run Chrome or Safari natively on my Linux box as well...

Installed it on my G4 at work, I like it so far. Top Sites is great, undecided on the top bar tabs, Cover Flow view of history is VERY useful! The AA button now zooms the page instead of just the text and reflowing, nice bit of semi res independence.

UI Glitch in Tiger - The top bar above the web page is Leopard grey, the status bar below the web page is Tiger brushed metal.

Will get a better idea when I get home tonight .

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

I like the top tab bar as it now uses less space than before. The top only had the buttons before so now there is more purpose.

I love the eye candy of the new Top Pages, not sure how useful I'll find it after the newness wears off but I like it conceptually enough.

It does seem faster in most things. Definitely not a fan of the new tabs, tho'. Probably too many years of using them as they were previously, but they just look ugly and unwieldy.

Top Sites is great, I've set it up already with the Edit button in the bottom left to pin the 6 work homepages in place. It makes a very nice, visual homepage for the regular sites you go to.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Seems to load pages slower ... or maybe its just Tuesday, or morning or the rain or ??? Other than that I like it and it conforms better to the whole OS-X theme.

But the refresh button is no longer available

It's cool that they didn't make this a SL only thing, which one could have expected given that SL looks lackluster from the end-user perspective.

Lackluster appearance to the end-user? Perhaps because the product's development hasn't been completed, there has been no public pre-release or demo and hence details are unknown. Especially to the end-user.

Would it be overcautious to wait for the WWDC SL demo until we start using expressions like lackluster?

Thanks.

Can't deal w/ the new tabs, blah. Went back to 3.2.1, and yes it does automatically reinstall your previous version when you uninstall 4.

I'm curious to install this, but I'm totally dependent upon 1password at this point.

Has anyone tried the beta and seen if 1password's plugin works with it?

1Password does not work.

How do I rearrange tabs? One used to be able to just drag them into a different order...

Also, "Reopen all windows from last session" isn't working - nor is opening links from external applications (i.e. clicking on a link in the Dock, or in Mail)

Apparently there's a hack…

The current beta's Bundle Version is 5528.16

And you can drag tabs using the little notches on the upper right of each tab.

Safari 4 is pretty slick. I'm a bit ambivalent about the "tabs on top" feature. I understand the point is to free up even more space by making use of the title bar space and eliminating separate tab bar. And it does that. I guess I'm so accustomed to Safari having tabs underneath it's still a bit odd to me. The Top Sites feature looks great but I don't think I'll use it much unless they change it. I don't like how the only option is to have Safari decide what goes on the page. There needs to be an option for the user to specify his/her own favorite sites and not just blindly go by page visit frequency. I did figure out that you can drag a bookmark onto one of the thumbnails and it will stay put for the remainder of that session. But once you restart the browser Safari will just eliminate it and put whatever it wants to put up there. I for one use WebKit and I see no point in wasting one of the spaces with the "Thank you for using WebKit!" page that is always displayed when you first fire it up. Other than that, it's a nice little upgrade.

BTW, not sure if you're as slow as I am, but it took me an hour or two to realize where the reload and stop button has gone to.

I understand they're trying to streamline and save space, but having the refresh/stop button away from all the other buttons seams a little unintuitive.

Jury is out on the tabs til I spend a few days with them.

I kinda like the Top Sites, seems like a cross between coverflow and expose. It'd be nice if the mapped it to a simpler key combo (by default), though.

Also, it might be more useful it if pulled your currently open tabs while doing it (Again, more like expose).

I can’t get Top Sites to add one of my sites… I tried loading that site like 30 times, and it still won’t show up. Is there any way to manually add a URL to Top Sites?

a few hours in...not feeling the new tabs. because they widen when in front, if i click on a tab, go to the one next to it, then go back, a lot of moving around to do. the coverflow stuff, too, seems unnecessary.. give me speed & stability! (and so far, S4 is good in those areas...)

It'd be amazing if hovering over one of the coverflow windows would allow me to scroll it.

It'll stay as long as it's one of your most frequently accessed sites. If not, pinning it doesn't keep it there beyond the current browser session.

You can drag and drop a bookmark to one of the Top Sites slots. You can even pin it. But as I said earlier this change does not persist beyond the current browser session. Once you restart the browser you are SOL. Not sure if this is a bug or a "feature".
