Is there software for the mac that will scan a page from a book and read it back through text-to-speech? I have a friend who has worsening eyesite and she wants to buy a PC because it has such software for scanning text and turning it into voice. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Your friend can get a OCR software that scans paper and convert it to text then use the text to speech software that included in Mac OS to read the text back to her.
My company makes OCR software and we are about to come out a Mac version. If she is interested, I can send her a beta copy of our Mac OCR software to try.

I hope this helps.

This was my response to the same question in the Lounge

Some useful info here. http://www.eskimo.com/~pristine/disabilities.html

Some software that may be of use (?) can be found at: http://www.ECNet.Net/users/gnorris/place.shtml http://mac.tucows.netcon.net.au/preview/45410.html
(If this link doesn't work, just go to tucows and search for "HearIt".) http://www.stazsoftware.com/YSpeak.htm http://www.sensiva.com/index.jsp?L=1 (coming soon, they say) http://www.scansoft.com/products/

BTW, I came across much of this info when visiting this site: http://macfreebees.tripod.com/

Hope any/all of this is useful.
