My new toy.

700 MHz, 12.1", 20 GB HD, 384 MB RAM, Airport

Well, I didn't buy the Apple Airport Base Station... decided NOT to bend over and take their pricing up the rear. Instead of the $469 CDN Base Station, I bought a Netgear MR314 wireless router for $239. Easy to set up, and much better range than the BS.

iPod to come.

Very nice desktop arrangement, murbot... I find it interesting when people have ample amounts of free desk space and yet put an iBook at the middle of it, but then it does offer the radical possibility of using that desk space for something ELSE.

Besides, clean desktops are a rare and precious thing, so I guess we should cherish them while they last!

It is a Shuttle SV or SS series PC. They come barebones. Motherboard, case, power supply - you have to buy the CPU, RAM, Hard Drive, Your choice of DVD/CD-RW/CD/ whatever and a floppy drive.

Here is my brand new iBook which I got last Saturday! Its a 12" 700 Mhz/Combo Drive. I was so excited I took pictures as I was unpacking the box. Dang! Apple has the best packaging!

fibroptikl: Looks pretty damn cool with that blue glow matching the desktop pic on your iBook. Is there a website for this Shuttle enclosure? What was your total cost? I've been playing with the idea of building a PC since my wife has been clamoring for a Wintel box.

I still wish we had that kind of flexibility for Macs. But it's also nice to avoid all the driver and configuration issues facing PC homebuilders.

They come in a variety of options. Check out the Shuttle web site; http://us.shuttle.com/product_mini.asp (exact link). There are configs for P3, P4, C3, and AthlonXP. They range from $225 to $315 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...tby=14&order=1).

Don't worry about the driver and configuration issues. It's not that BAD. But I'm a computer user (PC user to be exact) so I know what I'm doing (no offense). However even I am determined to become a Mac user.

Oh, and I didn't buy one/it, but I am pondering one. The one that is pictures looks to be a Pentium 3 model; with a light in it. Cold Cathode most likely.

I love my iBook. But I still miss my PowerBook 2400c's smaller size and lighter weight.

fibroptikl has pretty much answered your question. This was my attempt to build a quiet secondary PC. PCs in general are louder than Macs but we all know that.

It is actually pretty easy to assemble. You buy a kit. Buy your choice of CPU. I chose a VIA C3 processor @ 900 Mhz. It is not particuarly fast but is cool enough that it does not need a CPU fan. Buy your choice of hard disk. I chose a Seagate Barracuda because it is one of the quietest ones out there. That is pretty much it, it is a pretty good way to learn how to assemble a PC and how each component works. I run WinXP pro on it but others use it to run linux without a problem.

As for the blue glow, I dropped in a 4" cathode light behind the front plate and also blue LEDs.

One does not have to be particularly technical to do this. The total price is dependent on what components you drop in there e.g. CD-ROM vs. DVD-R drive, old unused HD vs. a new 120gb drive etc.

klinux: Thanks for the additional detail. With the price of Windows XP these days, the OS could almost be more expensive than the hardware!

I have never heard of a "VIA C3 processor" before. I guess there are more choices than Intel, AMD and Crusoe.

Yes, few people have heard of C3 processor. Even in the PC world, I have to tell people:

"No, it's neither an Intel nor an AMD".

"Yes, I am positive it is not an Intel (or AMD)."

"No, it does not need a CPU/heatsink fan."

Like Transmeta, C3's sort of a niche product - not powerful but runs cool and use very little power. Due to its size, people often use it as 1) HTPC (home theatre PC) to play MP3, DVD, DivX, files, 2) file server, or 3) portable gaming machines. I figure the cost of putting one together is prob <$500.

Most PC users probably think Mac as a niche product as well but I do see more and more of us (PC users) switching.

You may want to rethink that heat sink It dosn't put out a lot of heat but it still needs at least a passive heatsink... look at some the the pictures of the cpu... it says right on the chip "HEATSINK/FAN REQUIRED"

I may have given the wrong impression. While it is possible to run the C3 in a well ventillated system with not too heavy of a load without a heatsink, my CPU does have a heatsink on it but not the fan.

Something tells me that it's not just you!

Apple's pretty much moving the whole lineup over to the Adobe Myriad font as they're updated. If you still want a new Mac with the older Garamond font on it, you'd better run out and buy an iMac before January.

I can't exactly tell from the pictures on the apple website or any of the ones posted here if the cd drives on the new ibooks still have buttons to open them (since we can now push f12 to eject/open the drive). Can someone let me know and/or post a picture? Just 'cause I'm curious!

I checked out a 700mhz 14inch iBook at futureshop and I don't remember seeing any button to open the CD tray...

I was just at B.Mac in Ottawa tonight, and they had a new-generation iBook 700 on display. The matte finish on the inside isn't as oppressively white as a photo like that might make you think it to be. I actually think it works rather well, although at the same time I'd prefer the silver, given the choice.

Is it just me or is the 12.1 inch 700mhz iBook like $200 more expensive on that website than on Apple's Canadian Site? Or have they not updated with the new products yet?
