Okay I'm a little slow at getting my powermac setup posted - got the computer last Feb. and finally got around to taking some pictures. The two left set ups (powerbook and powermac) are always there, the armada set up is when I have AP Comp Sci hw to do and don't feel like recompiling the program from mac to pc. Please excuse the quality of the images, taken off a Fuji 2700MX - ancient ancient digital camera.

To answer driven: the hood is actually plastic. It just shields the screen from extraneous light. It works pretty well, although it does look odd from the side. You don't really see it when you are in front of the monitor.

That's kind of neat. I've never seen one before. (It would do wonders for privacy in a cube environment as well.)

Now: Do you notice an improvement in picture quality with such a device?

There is a window to the right of my desk so it can make a difference during the day. It's a good 9 or 10" deep so it does provide quite a bit of shading. I think it helps. On the other hand, my monitor is one of the older ones. The screen isn't perfectly flat. I would guess that the hood makes less of a difference with the newer flat-screen LaCies.

Anyway, it's detachable, so if it doesn't help you just take it off.

My setup...

Pictured equipment:

-1GHz TiBook (1GB RAM), docked to 22" Cinema Display, SoundSticks, keyboard/mouse (my main work machine).
-17" Studio Display connected to a Quicksilver Dual 800 under the desk (MacOS X 10.2 Server, 2x60GB HD, 1GB RAM). Presently acts has the household print/file/backup server.
-on the left hand side is a FireWire 120GB HD, FireWire CD-ROM (for easy disk-to-disk copies), Clie cradle, VCR & Dazzle FireWire DV bridge.

Not shown is Wife's iBook, a 1GHz P-III Dell (kiddie games) and a homebrew Athlon 2000+ box. The Athlon is currently headless - I open a Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection to it from my PowerBook when I need to access software that is PC-only. It also spends much of its time powered off.

Yep. My wife thought I was a complete dork when I got excited on a trip to OfficeMax last year and just had to buy the trash can

hmm, my wife thinks i'm a dork for having bought my mac trashcan. i may be, but it's a necessity in the mac room (needs to be updated since it's missing my powerbook, but the desk has since become the home to my butt-ugly gateway pc)
and NYCFarmboy, i have the same camera, but my pics don't look that good! nice job.

I got that from the offical LOTR site.

But that one has the annoying logo and such on the pic.

I spent a few minutes doing the retouching. Took off the logo, cloned some orcs to make it fit to the wide screen
