Yeah, especially since that error, by itself, didn't do all that much; the Mets had tied the game again by that point, and they still had to win the next day to win the series. And it turns out the team was a bunch of cokeheads who never lived up to their full potential anyway. But Bill Buckner is all that people remember, and the mere mention of the name is sure to tweak all the Red sox fans in a five-mile radius.

And now Pedro is coming into the game, which I think is a good psychological move, because if Pedro does well, it will put this "Who's your Papi" business to rest once and for all...

Sorry, that was my fault for invoking He Who Must Not Be Named in a Red Sox thread. I promise to be good from now on (or, at least, until the 30th... )

I was hoping for a Red Sox/Rangers ALCS to settle that discussion. GWB is many things, but he's no Yankee....

Congratulations, and good luck in the Series.

Houston and St. Louis are both top-notch teams. This series should be entertaining to watch.

Well, gotta give the Sox their props. Too bad the Yankees' thin pitching and streaky bats finally caught up with them.
But the Curse ain't dead yet. Go Cards/Astros!

Someone from a St. Louis Sports forum posted this yesterday prior to the game:
--

NOT TODAY

Busch Stadium is not our house.

So I will not waste your time this morning talking about the importance of the Cardinals protecting our house in Game 6 of the NLCS. I will not broach the obscentity of seeing Houston players spilling champagne on our living-room carpet.

Busch Stadium is not our house.

It's much more important than that.

It's where many of us watched our first game, caught our first foul ball, begged for our first autograph.

It's where Gibby ruled the mound, where Brock ran like the wind, and where Ozzie made all the folks go crazy.

It's where the El Birdos dominated, where Sutter struck out the last batter of 1982, where Mike Shannon has worked since the joint opened in 1966.

The Ol' Redhead managed there. Stan the Man played his harmonica there. The White Rat led us back to glory there.

This is where Gussie drove the Clydesdales, where Willie McGee tracked down fly balls, where Joaquin Andujar summed up his philosophy of life in one simple word: Youneverknow.

This is where Big Mac smacked No. 70, where Tommy Lawless flipped his bat, where GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY...BRUMMER'S STEALING HOME!!!!!!!

This is where the greatest St. Louis team in Busch Stadium's history performed. That's right, the 2004 Cardinals. They had the best home-record, the best record in baseball. Right on that field.

Ted Simmons played there. Kenny Boyer managed there. And a beloved old man in a bright red jacket told a mournful nation why it was good and right to play baseball after Sept. 11.

My friends, Jack Buck's coffin rested on that field. Darryl Kile pitched his last game there. And many of cannot walk into that stadium without thinking of loved ones who are no longer with us.

Not today.

We don't lose today.

Not against the Houston Astros. Not against a pitcher named Pete Munro. Not against a wild-card team.

Not in Busch Stadium.

No, it's not our house.

It's simply the place where our memories congregate, where our baseball dreams are stored, where the voices of millions of fans and the ghosts of seasons past await their call to arms.

Folks, it's time to wake 'em up.
--

I think it applies to today as well.

OK, you can crunch numbers and come up with "oooh...that's eeeeeeerie" things very easily since numbers are so easily manipulated. But:

The last time the Sox won the Series was 1918.

The last time the Sox were in the Series was 1986. (One pitch from winning game 6, ball went through Buckner's legs, blew game 7)

So 18 and 86 are the operative numbers.

The last time the Sox were in the series was 18 years ago. The last time they won was 86 years ago.

Just an interesting thing I figured out...

Take it with a grain of salt.

P.S. I still think the Cards will win it all.

Wow. You don't see a suicide squeeze like that every day. That might even be something that Rickey hasn't done!

(yeah, I'm just baiting MOS to come back to this thread...)

edit: that was my last binary post until I get to 10000. Maybe I should retire, too?

It was a shame someone had to lose that game... congrats to the Cards!

I can't wait until Saturday!

p.s. Does anyone know the last time that two "original" teams in their original cities met in the Series?

Wow, just back from the game. That's the loudest I've ever heard Busch Stadium. A great start by Suppan who outpitched the Rocket. The fans were crazy during the whole game, but after the final out... damn. Outside the stadium was chaos. The bar I went to afterwards was just a madhouse. Too bad I had to leave kinda early because of work tomorrow.

The best part is we get to start this whole thing up again on Saturday.

Go Cards!
