The colors in both your existing tatoos and the new ones are fantastic! The artwork is out of this world to start with, and those vibrant colors just make the art jump out at you. It's awesome!

However, aren't you now going to have to wear a shirt EVERYWHERE to keep them from fading?

While I'm not the "tatooing type" (I'm alergic to pain, plus I'm too darn furry for anything to show), but I can appreciate craftsmanship and artistry. Great choice in artist, Samurai!

They look good man, painful, but good.

That said, I can't wait for this "fad" to end with the tribal and other lameass tat crowd. You know, the ones that are doing it for no other reason than it's the "in" thing amongst the maggots.

Black and grey ink will hold very well if applied correctly, as for color, nothing more than some good sun-block, and it will stay bright. Thanx people.

No kidding. Even Vogue magazine "officially" declared the tribal tats out of style in 1997, IIRC!

If you want to mess with someone showing off their "tribal" tattoo, just ask them "what tribe?"

Ouch. Just ouch.

Never am I doing that *shudder*

But very impressive artwork.

All those little splatterings of colour and black on the right side of your torso aren't supposed to stay there, are they? (Yeah, I'm a tattoo ignoramus)

Hear, hear!!! The "in crowd" thing with people getting inked just because "everybody does it" bugs me to no end. I can hear countless mothers asking "if everybody was marching off a cliff, would you do it too?" I can't blame those mothers!

And the Anglo folks with Asian character tattoos make me wonder "do you know what those characters mean?" Wouldn't it be embarrassing to find out what you thought said "Harmony" and "Tranquility" actually meant "Stupid" and "Easy?" And what about contextual meanings based on social groupings you CAN'T research? You could find the perfect character, have it perfectly tattooed on, and yet not know that people from a certain province take the combination of those characters to mean something VERY bad! Hands down, this fad beats the "barbed wire" and "celtic knotwork" armband for unwise!

thank you. everything there that is not black outline was stencil that has now washed off. It will be all black and grey with the flames being red, and smoke running throughout the open areas, very traditional.

You pique my curiosity... Do you mean that there are tons of clueless people with Asian characters tattooed all over them, or something else?

This could happen, of course, but it's highly unlikely. The same characters nearly always mean more or less the same thing in different dialects. Occasionally, you'll get a word that's used in its broader (usually original) sense in most places, but has a more specific, often slang, meaning in certain places (such as 同志, which means 'comrade' in all of China, except among younger people in Beijing [and on the internet], where it means 'gay'); but mostly, the meaning of characters doesn't change with dialects, just the pronunciations and the grammatical usages of the characters. But even the Chinese themselves are subject to these: I've seen several examples of outsiders (ie. people not from Beijing) referring to a friend as XXX同志 (it's still common to call people 'Comrade XXX'), and the (local) friend would look aghast at them and say, “What did you just call me?!?”

A bigger issue with the meaning of the characters might be what the same characters mean in Japanese or Korean. In most cases, the meaning will still be the same, but I suspect there might well be some cases where the meaning of a character has changed quite a bit in either Chinese or Japanese/Korean, and it could lead to embarassing situations. But then again, the same thing could be said for English words: you could have a very nice English word with a very nice meaning tattooed on your forearm, and just happen to be so unlucky that it means 'horny prostitute for free horse sex' in Polish or something. *

Anyway, this is not to say that I disagree with you: the fad of having more or less randomly chosen Oriental characters engraved fairly permanently on your body, without having any kind of relation to these characters - sometimes without even knowing what they mean - is utterly ridiculous. I always think that if someone ends up having 'special offer: grilled chicken' tattooed on his chest without his knowledge, he deserves every bit of stick and ridicule he'll get for it.

* This is not taken from experience, get your minds out of the gutter!

My sources (ie. a quick google search) tells me that the Polish for 'prostitute for free horse sex' is something like:

“Roznamiętniona kurwa dla wolnego koniaseksu” (apologies if the grammar - or everything for that matter - is screwed up a bit)

I'll leave it up to your usually very active imagination to figure out what English words this could be.

Day-after edit: Upon confirmation from a much bewildered Polish co-worker today, I can firmly state that the correct form should be “Roznamiętniona kurwa dla wolnego seksu końskiego”

Very cool tattoo

as for the asian character fun, check:
