A friend's rev a iMac died, and he didn't have his important stuff backed up. I know the hard drive can be removed (I have instructions), but is there a way to put this hard drive into an enclosure so that it can be recognized by another machine, and ultimately retrieve the HD contents? DataSavers is willing to take it on, but the cost is pretty high. If there's an alternative, I'd appreciate hearing it. Thanks!

Know anyone with a Power Mac?
If I understand right you can just stick an HD in there and have it work.
hmmmmm

I dono though, never tried it, I also heard about some sorta Firewire device that lets you stick a normal size HD in, but I don't know anything more about it, sorry

If it is truly a dead hard drive, Data Savers is your only option. If the hard drive is dead, just putting it into another machine or into an "enclosure" won't bring it back to life.
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Yes, you can do this. First of all though, can you hear the hard drive spin up? KarlG was right about that, if the hard drive doesn't even spin up, or sounds all funky then it's a problem with the hard drive and putting it in another system won't help. If it does spin up though you have 3 options. Connect it as a slave drive on the 2nd IDE hard drive cable inside a powermac case. Or pick up an external USB case. Or pick up an external firewire case. Check www.pricewatch.com for the external cases, my guess would be you would pay around $50 to $60. But if you get the case you just plug it in inside the case and it will work fine on another mac.
