I just read in a book "MacBook Pro Portable Genius" published in 2009 that says "Time Machine does not support backing up to a hard drive connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station."

I had heard about this problem about a year ago. Has this problem been fixed?

It's not supported by Apple but it is possible. Setup the Airport Extreme to allow access to a disk connected to it. In Leopard, it should show up in the Finder sidebar as a disk. Connect to it, then open Time Machine preferences and select the newly mounted disk. I've done this for 6 months now and it works without problems. But again, if you have an issue, Apple will not support the configuration.
