Hi all,

I'm sure this question has been posted before but here goes....
I have a Pismo Powerbook and I just signed up for earthlink.
My problem is that I've tried all the available local access numbers and the fastest connect speed I can get is 31K....is there anything I can do to get the speed up to 56K? Thanks in advance.

Many things affect your connect speed. You will never get 56k. You might get 51200 but never 56k. things that affect speed are line noise (which powerbooks are verrry sensitive to) quality of cabling and the modems at the other end.

Despite the 56K moniker, modem speeds (at least in the US) are limited to 53K due to FCC regulations on permitted voltages on the phone lines, so you're never going to get over 53K, no matter what you do, even if you were calling next door.

You may also find that other devices connected to your phone line can impair performance since they can add additional impedance on the line, lowering the voltage further. Devices such as telephones, answering machines, fax machines, etc. can all contribute to this. Try disconnecting these *before* you connect to your ISP and see if you see a difference.

Next, Modem Magic provide a set of updated CCLs tuned for different modems. CCLs are the connection scripts that Remote Access uses to establish a connection over the modem. The default CCLs shipped with the OS often don't take advantage of all a modem's features, instead using generic settings that work for most modems. If you're using a supported modem, Modem Magic can make a big difference.

For more info on 56K-related issues (including the new V.92 standard), check http://www.56k.com . their troubleshooting guide discusses other things to try which may improve speeds.

I have a similar problem. My Imac NEVER connects above 38K. However I can connect my PM4400 using a USR Sportster to the same phone line and It ALWAYS connects at 48K or better. I'd LOVE to get my Imac to perform like my 4400!

I also use Earthlink and all I have is a lousy 33k and it usually runs around 3.5k a sec. so Earthlink is not the problem.
Your on your own from here.
