I just bought a mac, now I expected to be able to share my home network, access my files on my other computers, go to the office and print there, and access the netware network on my office. But hey, guess what this machine can not do that without installing third party software!!!! What the? This sucks, and to top it all off, the email address that I had from mac that I though what a cool thing now I have to pay 50 dolars for the first year and 90 bucks for the next ones? Is it just me or is this highway robbery.......AND now Jaguar will now cost me 120 bucks and I bought my laptop 3 weeks ago...... CAn anyone help me with the headaches this machine has caused me by pointing me to where I can fix them?

Take a look at their site for the link.

As far as the rest, welcome to the club. Apple decided that goodwill is not worth the time anymore (apparently). The more cynical here would simply say "get a Dell". I would say that you should factor all of this in Apple's total cost of ownership and weight you options next time you have to choose between Apple and Wintel.

Oh, and it's not $90/yr. It's $100

I don't know, I went out to carracho and the latest build of Jaguar pretty much looks free to me. You've just got to stand in line.

I've got plenty of money and I'll pay for whatever upgrades but there are a bunch of poor-ass kids out there on carracho trading Steve Jobs latest gem. Apple has to be leaking this stuff on purpose.

Anyway, I'm not hear to start a carracho thread, but as far as your networking issues go, get dave 3.1 (or wait for Jaguar however you get it), Office X, and Virtual PC. My Ibook integrates perfectly with Windows.

asmujica:

I don't know too much about Novell networks except that they don't seem to be as common anymore. You still should be able to FTP and/or SSH to machines on a Novell network, as far as I know. Why don't you tell us exactly what you have tried to do, and what the problems are?

Brazuca:

I don't know if you've been here long enough to hear from Kelly Hogan (or if you are he), but you are reminding me of him. What do you hope to accomplish by repeating your general displeasure over and over again in here? You have the support and agreement of many people in here, why not move to the next level? Not trying to sound confrontational, just urging some evolution...

It does cost to run those services (iTools/.Mac), especially as numbers have grown. I agree with the points made by many about how Apple could have provided a better path for existing account owners, but if you look at the logic rationally, I think you will take this less personally...

The only reason I posted on this thread is because the user was asking for advice. I thought that "consider the total cost of owning a mac when deciding on a purchase" to be pretty fair and unbiased. And I certainly haven't said anything against .Mac here.

I've read his other posts as well, and I understand his annoyance with this .Mac thing. I recently moved to my ISP's mail and it works fine, but some people aren't as lucky. I can see why Apple would do it, but for the hundreth time it's definitely WAY overpriced.

People are just putting out their opinions and I know it's annoying to see tons of threads on the same thing, but seriously, if you don't want to read it avoid the thread. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

must stop paying on sight...i now own quicktime 6, an os x mpeg 2 decoder and .mac...oh, wait, they are all useful to me...next thing you know i might buy final cut pro...wait, i did...and os x...and will buy jaguar (retail on release day for 'early' access)

really, the best stuff should be free. i'm a developer, i've used jaguar, and it's fast enough to feel free.

but i wish it was all really free. then i could get away without working. whee!
