So, I have had two window style AC units sitting in a storage locker for around 5 years.

I'm thinking that they may have become damaged or contaminated in some way due to the storage conditions.

It looks like they have been sitting vertically which I am worried has caused the refrigerant to settle in the wrong parts.

I'm also worried about mold or other contaminants spewing out if I ever try to turn it on...
I saw an article about a local resident who claimed that their AC unit caused mushrooms to sprout of out of their floorboards!

I am not mechanically inclined at all.
How can I assess the viability of these beasts?

ac units dry the air so I have no idea how it would make it grow mushrooms...

I would personally blow it out with a shop compressor (using an air nozzle to clean out dust) and just run it...

Air conditioning units dry the air by pulling moisture out of the air - that moisture has to go somewhere, and where it goes is where evil things will grow.

Just take it down to your local church and have the priest bless it.

I found a small Bolivian village in my A/C, but I don't consider that evil.

Turn it upright and do not use it for 24 hours.

Clean out the coils and flush out the water drainage area. Air conditioners can spread Legionnaires' disease if not maintained (I learned this from House).
