Is there any such drive available that has both FireWire and USB connectors? I'd like the flexibility of having great speed available on my mac, but being able to plug it in to an old iMac or anything should the need arise.

Yes & no is your answer! Yes I can think of a CD burner that works with FireWire and USB. It's made by "FreeCom" (Not to be confused with "3com" which is another company altogether) The disadvantage of this unit is that it doesn't matter if it's connected via FireWire or USB, it will still only burn at 4X speed max.

do you have a URL for this company? www.freecom.com doesn't seem to work, nor does www.freecom.co.uk?

Also, I haven't ever heard of this company-are they reputable and mac-friednly?

How do their burners stack up against, say, those of QPS? (The Que FireDrives for example)

www.freecom.de (it's a German company). I've got a Traveller, with USB and Firewire cables. Works great on both (I use the USB cable on my iBook and Firewire on my G3 B/W). Battery powered, and I've even burned a CD on the train with my iBook
They also do a straight portable drive (all their drives use the same multi-cables) that's a bit bulkier, but much cheaper.
I also noticed that VST seem to be rebadging the Traveller for release as their USB/Firewire drive.

i just took a look at the freecom site. this drives seem awesome, in terms of versatility, speeds, and size.

i haven't heard of the company either, how many of you out there have used 'em?

where do you buy these drives in the US? how much do they cost? all the prices were in some other pricing scheme (german?).

thanks.

VST (www.vsttech.com) makes a USB CD-RW that has an optional FireWire cable. If your looking for a reliable company, they certainly are one.
