So I was bumming around with 'Search' - and I came across a thread where someone had found this image: http://homepage.mac.com/chancha/.Pic...0123235712.jpg - I was curious if anyone knows how to black out all of the icons like that? Or a new program that had come about? I am working on an all black theme and these would be absolutely perfect. Any help would be great. Thanks a lot!

Edit: It shows Skin-a-Dock on there - has anone confirmed that that application can make all the icons black? I've dont a bit of googling and found that SAD could cause some damage?

The icons aren't blacked out, they're actually customized icons. There is no app that will just automatically alter existing icons.

And if I'm not mistaken... that's Windows not OS X...

Man, what a bummer... Does nayone know how I could customize my icons? Is it as simple as bringing them into Photoshop and altering them? Thanks for the replies!

By the way, Atheist - that is definately OSX in the screenshot.

I'm still not totally convinced it's OS X. The reason I say this is that I'm familiar with the OS X emulation community (check out Aqua-Soft)... and have seem some amazingly accurate emulations of the Aqua interface. A few things stand out in the screenshot.

1. What's the volume control doing on the far right of the menubar.
2. The resizer image in the bottom right corner of the window looks wrong.
3. The spacing of the magnified dock icons appears to be too far apart. It looks more like ObjectDock.

1 - You can place the volume control or any other icon that goes in the menubar wherever you like .. but now that I think about it, spotlight is nowhere around ..
2- Don't see anything wrong with the resizer image
3 - There are some dock icons called blank icons if I'm not mistaken .. they're used to create a gap between icons

That definitely is OS X. So all you really need to do is find that icon set (it looks like a custom icon set to me, rather than normal icons turned black). Can't seem to find anything on xicons.com, but you could search deeper.

How, though? Photoshop? I've figured out that that's what I'll need to do, I just don't know how...

Ok, since no one can really answer my question, I'll re-phrase it.

I understand now that the icons in the above screenshot are custom. That being said, I'd like to make my own custom icons. How do I do this? Do I use Photobucket? CS doesn't recognize the icons I pulled from an existing set. Any Ideas?

Search macupdate.com for icon and you should find some apps that let you mess around with icons. Photoshop will too, but someone will have to advise you since I can't afford that hefty program. To apply a custom system icon set you use a program called Candybar.

There are numerous Photoshop Actions/Extensions that work quite well in this field, there are some shareware apps as well.

You could even start with any graphics app to start drawing and convert your outcome with a freeware converter into the .icns format.

Iconographer lets you start easy and works even unregistered for beginners, at least this did it for me. However I'm not affiliated in any way with the developer.

Or you could start by just altering one icon a time by copy-edit-paste and learn it that way.
Whatever route you're gonna take, it'll need some effort and (gasp) money in the end to achieve good results. ;-)

I'm fine with putting in the effort. Heck, I'd like to do it, but I just don't have the money to spend...
Now I can only hope some creator of GUI's comes out with an all-black icon set for the most used programs. Thanks for everyone's help!

So someone on Macnn posted that original screenshot? Can't you find out from them where they got the icon set?

As said above, I have made some icons similar to those, but mine are more black AND white, while those look to be just black which works surprisingly nicely. Not to mention those one include a couple more apps.

I'd love to have this icon set!

Edit: speaking of which, if anyone is interested in my icons please post in that thread as I do have a lot more icons I've made, I just never uploaded them as nobody seemed to be interested.

Get Pixadex. You can download a trial (but it's worth buying): Iconfactory : Software : Pixadex

It's basically iPhoto for your icons. You can import PNG's and convert them to ICO's, and vise versa. It's really handy. Just import your icons, convert them to PNG's, edit them in photoshop, then import them as PNG's again and convert to ICO's.
